Planned: The road trip to end all road trips

So this past weekend I mapped out preliminary routes for two 13-day, 7,000-plus-mile road trips from my home base of Dallas: one trip to the northwest with Seattle as the far point, and another to the northeast with Acadia National Park in Maine as the far point. Both trips have 'goals' beyond those far points ...

... and I've decided to do the northeast trip in early to mid-May. The goals: visit the northeast's three National Parks (Cuyahoga Valley/Acadia/Shenandoah) and every single place I lived as a grade-schooler -- including my birthplace in Michigan, which I don't remember at all -- except one (Germany ... kinda hard to drive there, LOL). Those places are in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Virginia.

Oh, and I'll be seeing a few friends along the way, too.

Right now, the trip will involve 22 states and lap up about 7,200 miles on Alli the 718's ticker. Any suggestions for roads to drive, places to eat/stay/roll through, etc. are more than welcome!

Good on the NE trip! I really want to do the down-east Maine trip with the car when I get it. Although the NW wouldn't be too shabby either. I will follow your progress. Wife has suggested Glacier NP and area as well. That would be a mega-trip from FL.

I've done northwest trips several times; that's part of the reason I'm going another way for this one. Glacier N.P. is stunning; definitely one of the best ones out west (I've been to most of them). Others I'd recommend: Black Canyon of the Gunnison (western Colorado), Yellowstone/Grand Teton (western Wyoming), Zion (southern Utah) and, of course, Grand Canyon. Yosemite's nice, too, but overcrowded most of the time.

Lived in Colorado and never did the Black Canon...regrets. Been to the rest and would avoid Grand Canyon,Yosemite, Yellowstone due to crowds, except for the very off-season. Enjoy your planning...that's half of the fun.

Kancamangus , highway in the white mountains National park in N.H. is a sweet ride. Into Lincoln , and around the notches. I plan on doing that one this summer

See, this is the kind of stuff I'm looking for ... my route through that area was going to be on U.S. 302 right by Mt. Washington -- just to the north of Kangamagus. I'll be correcting that tonight.

Thanks, Schredder!

if you will be anywhere near the middle of ohio you have to hit this road for a bit:

The Triple Nickel - Route 555 in Ohio | Ohio Motorcycle Roads and Rides | MotorcycleRoads.com

did it on the bike last year but it would be a lot more fun in the 718. i have an ultra classic and a passenger and there were too many 1st gear corners for my liking in that scenario. the entire road is 55mph (or at least the majority of it) and i plan on going back down there this summer in the cayman.

if you are anywhere near cleveland and have time i'd take you out for a dinner and a beer or two and show you some sights around town.

He once won the Tour-de-France but was disqualified for using a unicycle.

I don't always drive a sports car, but when I do it's a Porsche. Stay fast my friends.

I love epic road trips! This one better come with a drive report, I'll go pop some popcorn.

There are some EPIC roads in WV and VA. If you want any tips on some, drop me a line. I've planned countless motorcycle touring trips in the Appalachians for years (from north GA to the Green Mountains of VT). Love me some twisties!

I've heard of the Triple Nickel but I don't think I'll be near it (will double check tonight or over the weekend) because I'll be rolling through the north after Michigan ... and overnighting somewhere near Cleveland. So yeah: I'll definitely ping you when the trip gets close!

(BTW: I use MotorcycleRoads.com as a resource for trip planning. Great crowd-sourced site, and more reliable than most others like it.)

it is about 2.5 hours south of cleveland, so if you are heading NE it is not on your way from michigan. if you want to kill a day though it would be a great way to do it...
