I find all the hand wringing and whining about turbos to be absurd. Whether a car is N/A or turbo was never the end all, be all for me. Neither was the sound for that matter.

I still have my N/A 6mt B7 RS4 but that doesn’t detract one iota from a nice turbo car. IMO, in the end, it is about, how well built or composed the total car is, at a price point.

I’ll admit, I just think all the whining about turbos and sound with newer cars is more a reflection of tired reviewers running out of interesting things to say than about the quality of the driving experience. Henry Catchpole, Chris Harris...and a host of other self absorbed reviewers.

Luckily, we have some fresh faces with less ennui on YouTube.

Interesting read

I take your point about the somewhat tiresome reviews and I have had 6 flat 6 engined Porsche’s before so I think I know what they sounded like. I like the engine note of my GTS but can agree that it is less aurally pleasing than before. But as an overall package this is an epic engine

In the same road back to back, me in my old 991 carrera S would not see where I had gone compared to me in the 718 cayman GTS. Point to point just no contest

Over in Ingolstadt Audi has also been scratching its head trying to figure out how to unlock the magic in turbocharging. The new RS5 swaps out the old screaming 4.2-litre V8 for a V6, a Porsche-developed unit that nestles two turbos within its valley, just like the V8 in an RS6 Avant Performance. Our test car is in a curious, deep Sonoma Green.
To use one of their words, what "curious" prose. Audi turbocharged their 5 cylinder in the Ur-quattro back in 1980. Pretty sure they know how to "unlock the magic" after nearly 40 years of experience.

The really annoying thing is that reviews don't differentiate the engine performance from the sound of the engine. They just say, "An exceptional car, except for the engine" and claim they would prefer the previous gen car over the latest ones ...

I find reviewer complaints about turbos to be ignorant, especially when they demonstrate lag compared to a NA car. As if there is no power until the turbo kicks in. The other aspect is learning how to drive a turbo car and keep the RPMs in the right range to reduce lag. This is similar to driving an NA car when you want to be in the upper RPMs where the power is.
