I have a 2018 base Cayman with 18" wheels.

The interior is not real quiet, especially on roads that are more "textured" (it's not bad on most of our local freeways which tend to be smoother). I think a lot of the noise comes from the tires. It's a sports car and I think the noise sort of comes with the territory. The mid-engine configuration probably contributes to this.

The car is noticeably quieter if I do not select the "Sport" button.

I would call the ride in my car acceptable. The 19" wheels have tires with shorter sidewalls so I would expect things would be slightly rougher. Perhaps someone with those wheels can weigh in here.

I have a lower back issue and am in my late 60s (I was just at my orthopedic doc yesterday). The standard seats are OK. To some degree, if you have back problems, ALL seats can get uncomfortable after a while. We picked up our '18 Cayman at the PEC in Atlanta and drove it home to NJ (1500 miles). I was fine but I tend to stop every 2 or 3 hours and get out and walk around. I even do that when driving our Honda or my truck.

I use mine as a semi-daily driver (in nice weather). The two trunks have a decent amount of room, but there isn't much extra space inside the car if you have a passenger with you.

I just picked up my 2018 base Cayman with 19" tires a little over 2 weeks ago. I would not consider the ride overly harsh but it is certainly not soft either. I have had harsher sports cars but being a sports car it is by no means a soft ride. The noise in the cabin is a little louder than I expected but it doesn't bother me. I have the 14 way seats and they are pretty comfortable, but again, they are not soft, plush and cushy comfortable. I don't think most would want that in a sports car. You can certainly use the car as a daily driver but if the cabin noise, stiff than most ride and firmer sporty seats are going to bother you, the Cayman isn't for you.

I agree with everything lajoiedp and aeronca65tl wrote above. I had a 2014 981 Cayman with 19" wheels and standard suspension and 14-way seats. My spouse and I used it regularly for pleasure trips of between two and eight hours straight and never felt uncomfortable. At times the noise level was quite high depending on road surfaces but not unbearable.

We just took delivery of a 2018 Cayman with the 19" wheels, 14-way seats, and PASM and in just a short time of driving it, I believe the standard setting with PASM is noticeably softer than the 981 and the sport suspension seems equal to the 981 or a bit more firm.

We are both in our sixties and are both car people so we expect the Cayman to be rough and noisy. When we need the extra room or comfort, we take her Volvo XC70!

I have 20" wheels on mine and I don't think it is too harsh.

I have travelled all over Europe in my 981 which had the sports plus seats and always found them really comfortable.

I know many people that use a 718 as a daily driver and they get louder the more you press the loud pedal :)

I have the 19 inch wheels and they are reasonably comfortable. Though, if I had back problems and I was purchasing a base Cayman I would probably lean toward the 18 inch wheels. I think more of an issue for your back is PDK verses manual.........in your case I highly recommend PDK.
As a DD with back issues.........well I would not think the 718 is the best choice but lets wait to hear other opinions. The other recommendation is take a longer test drive and see how it affects your back.

My experience:

I have a 718C with the standard suspension, standard seats, 19" wheels and PDK. Previously I drove a vintage Boxster S with PASM. The 718 has a much more compliant ride than the 997 had. My wife and I find it quite comfortable on smooth roads but it still provides the handling required for spirited driving. As far as seat comfort goes we are very pleased. My wife has back issues and she has suffered in virtually every car we've had in the last 10 years. She, as do I, have found the seats quite comfortable even after a day trip of 6 hours ( 3 hours each way with a couple of hours in between).

There is a bump on a road near my house that would bounce the 997 off the road at 30 mph, but the Cayman just swallows it up without losing composure.

I currently have a 2016 981 with X73 suspension and 19" Wheels, the ride is stiff but not harsh. I previously had a 2014 981 with standard suspension and 19" wheels and when I first got the 2016 I honestly did not feel a material difference in ride. I extensively test drove 718s both base and S in 19" wheels. I can tell you that the standard suspension in these was softer than the ride in my X73 based Cayman. Sufficiently so, that I made sure that I configured my build with PASM to stiffen the ride. I also noticed that while I heard a bit more engine sound, the tire sound intrusion was less (I offer this with a bit of caution as it could just be new tires vs tires with several thousand miles on them). Now if you want to talk sound intrusion, you should have owned a Cayman R........
