2018 New Cayman Held up at Los Angeles Port

Hello! I ordered my very first Porsche in September from the dealer in downtown Los Angeles (I live out of state in Nevada). It's a custom build and I'm so excited to get it because it is literally my dream car. It was supposed to be ready for pick-up in late December but it has since been "delayed at the port." I talked to my sales guy yesterday and after months of promised delivery dates, he said that now it will be held up in port "indefinitely."

I'm not upset about waiting because hey, it's a huge car payment I don't have to pay until they hand over the keys, but is this something I should be worried about? It's weird not knowing when I will have to travel down to L.A. to pick up my new baby, but I'm also concerned about how it's being held at the port. Is it sitting outside getting exposed to the salt air? Is it enclosed? Is something terribly wrong with the shipment? What is the real story about why it's not being released to the dealer?

I'm hoping someone has experience with this and can ease my mind or tell me what you'd do in my situation. I've already signed the paperwork and put down my $5k nonrefundable deposit, so the car is mine -- as soon as I can get it!

Moviegal, how did this turn out? i just got an email that my car arrived yesterday (Davisville RI) but is "held for port action," I'm waiting for clarification/explanation when more info is available. Not too many posts/threads here on such things so I'm curious what real experience you had and why the car would be held up once it's off the ship.
Add me to the "car held at port" team - mine arrived on 5/7 and I've been told some software reflash or something or the other. Unfortunately it seems like I'm one of 8 cars (taycans to 911's and cayennes, i'm the only cayman) that are held up and answers are wishy-washy besides "software"...

A friend who has worked at several ports suggested that there's a software update that the manufacturer will have someone perform on the cars at the port, rather than distributing the software and instructions to each dealer and then reimbursing each of them for the work. These "port actions" are not really a customs issue but rather something the manufacturer wants to make sure is done before the car is delivered. Yet, so far the only explanation I got from the dealer is that it might have something to do with "chips." I think maybe that was convenient sales-speak.

The car left the factory 3 weeks ahead of schedule, but now I'm a brat about having to wait!
Could be tpms failure that holds your cars back

100% in the same scenario as you - haven't really been able to get a solid answer other than "it's happened before", "it's a myriad of cars so not only 718's", "we can only rely on the expected dealer inventory" date - which is 6/04 for me.

If I get any more information this week, I'll update!
Also, @Bob V my car is a 2021 Cayman T. Curious on your spec if we can narrow it down to a commonality?

2021 718 Boxster base, extended range fuel tank, lane change assist, entry and drive, power steering plus, and some cosmetic options that probably wouldn't need any programming. But still lots of firmware in common with your Cayman T.

My car arrived at Davisville, RI, on 5/13. It's not a huge shipping port, no containers just roll-on-roll-off vessels. What they lack in cranes they make up for in parking lots. Where did yours come in?
Here's my more recent thread: "Held for port actions" at Davisville RI

Sounds like we're close enough in basic builds. I opted for the sport design package front and rear - perhaps you did as well? Maybe our extra body work! Ha...on a serious note, see below from the information I was given:

My car hit Houston on 5/06, with original expectation of 5/28
PDI in on 5/06
Port Handling - quality action - 5/6

Next line with dates is release from port and it says 5/28 - 6/04

So half wondering if the cars early arrival is part of the reason "port handling" is taking long. Makes no sense as you would think they would recognize and speed up customer order cars over potential dealer stock...
