I just purchased a used GTS 6MT with 10K miles.

If I accelerate hard and quickly shift from 1st to 2nd and quickly let go of the clutch, I hear a notable "clunk" in the engine compartment. Is this normal? I rememeber some manual cars I've owned in the past had this.

Is it just the factory trans/engine mounts flexing or something else?

Ok so just to be more precise. It's actually not a "thunk"but more of a soft" clack clack" on the passenger rear side. I clipped the seat belt on and removed the rear hatch visor and still can hear it. Sounds like something inside the engine compartment is hitting the cover itself?? This only happens if I shift and let off the clutch abruptly and almost always from 1st to 2nd. If I shift very smoothly, nothing can be heard. Now if I floor this thing and shift very very fast and dump the clutch, the clack clack sound is a bit louder, 95% of the time from 1st into 2nd.

Just hope that you guys are hearing the same thing and it's perfectly normal.

Hard to say of course without hearing it, but I can hear the shifter linkage move in my 6MT. If it's been sitting awhile, as in the winter, I can hear the clutch linkage as well until it loosens up.

I'll try to record it. Also note that I just recently acquired this car (used at 10K miles) and haven't driven a manual for a while prior to this. If my timing is off when I release the clutch or release it quickly, will I hear this clack /thud?

So is it related to shifter movement, clutch release, or both? Can you narrow it down?

Wondering how far you wind out 1st gear. Sometimes, if I go into a gear below that gear's minimum RPMs, my car sounds like it is clucking its tongue at me. Naughty boy! 1st to 2nd would be kind of a weird place to do that, but I bet I could. It is like a "too much load" warning.

Winding out at any rpm does it, but it won't if I go easy on letting go of the clutch.

I wonder if it is a "getting the right rhythm" with it. For example, all the high performance books I read prior to my first HPDE harped on "smooth but quick" for everything, including the clutch.

Just immediately after clutch release, especially if I let go abruptly.
Well, if it only occurs under high load with abrupt shifts, it's probably driver induced. I would imagine that something mechanical would be showing up more frequently and under a variety of conditions, not just the one you describe.

The fallback position, of course, is to have your dealer look at it.

As a wild, "it can't be that simple" idea, check to be sure there's nothing inside the small covered storage bin behind the passenger seat on the forward part of the deck.
