The January 2019 issue of Car and Driver has their annual 10Best story, and for the 20th time the Boxster and Cayman were selected, with the magazine calling them “unassailable” and noting that “there’s still nothing remotely close, driving-wise, to Porsche’s mid-engined sports cars.” In fact, according to one of the authors, “Porsche sells so few of these cars that I feel like we ought to write each of those buyers a thank-you note for doing their part to keep the model alive.”

I'll take a thank you note, but honestly, it's largely due to C&D that I've lusted after Caymans since 2006. And personally, I dig the pseudo exclusivity that comes from owning a car with a fairly low production volume.

Also...save the manuals!

Thx for the link to the article. I too have been obsessed with the Cayman and previously the drop top only Boxter model due to C&D articles for many years and a brief drive in a Boxter 15 yrs ago that I still remember to this day. As a first time owner of a Cayman, I still get goosebumps every time I approach the car to go out for a drive. I’ve driven dozens of sports cars over the years but nothing translates engineering into a drive experience like Porsche.

I would like to see a review of the Cayman S with the "Soundaktor" disabled. Without it, the engine sound is much better. My sense is that much of the criticism is a result of droning caused by the "Soundaktor." It is still plenty loud without it.

. Still surprised there hasn’t been any YouTube or clips to show the difference in sound between pre and post disconnection. Would be very interested to hear the difference.

Seems to be a very personal perception experience. I pulled my fuse last week before a romp on country roads and could tell a difference. I think Sailor99 used the right word, "drone". I kind of liked the consistency of the drone created by the Soundaktor so I was a bit skeptical about pulling the fuse, but I feel the fuse is much easier to replace than to take out, so it was worth the experiment. I'm keeping it out because I still hear the exhaust fine, but I have the added mechanical noises that are masked by the drone. I like the sound of precision machinery in action.

I'll try to remember to record what I'm hearing the next time out, but do kind of get wrapped up in the experience.
