Hello,

Like many owners my 718 Cayman has had an annoying amount of rattles and squeaks. Most of them I have now tracked down and removed entirely or greatly reduced. So here is a little guide I've made to help fellow owners. Please feel free to add your own experiences.

Let's start with an easy one. The passenger side seat belt rattle. You need to slide the seat belt retainer part right to the top to hold the buckle in place. As per the photo below.

Seat Squeak. Pressure on the side bolster around my shoulder and upper arm would cause a very annoying squeak. At first I thought it was the plastic airbag dome because I could produce a squeak by pushing on this area, but in fact it wasn't this making a noise when I was sat in the seat. It was coming from the seat latch mechanism. Using a spray can of lithium grease and a straw nozzle I sprayed little bursts in the metal moving parts I could see through the gap, I moved the latch up and down to access different areas, I also put a little grease on the inside plastic runners where the knob slides up and down. I finished off my moving the latch up and down many times to work all the grease through. This has so far completely solved the seat squeak.

Rear Storage lid rattle. On my passenger side (RHD) this lid would rattle. I tried the lid in both the fully open and closed positions without and luck. With the lid fully open I then lifted it slightly and stuffed in a paper towel in the gap to stop the lid moving at all. This stopped the rattle. So far I'm not sure of a neat solution to this one.

Rear fluid lid Covers. These things can make an annoying high pitched rattle. To test simply remove them and go for a drive. I was able to reduce the noise by removing the lids and spraying a small amount of silicone grease on the plastic closing latches. Another solution is to use a bit of rubber under the lid so it's pushing upwards when the lid is secured and holding it in place.

Rear Trunk/Clunk Rattle. This one plagued and 981 but seems better on the 718. I have done three things to reduce this. First of all I wrapped Velcro tape around the latch locking pin as per this photo.

You can see the depressed part of the velcro where the latch catches. You will need to push the springy parts at the side down to access the pin.

Secondly I added Velcro to the stoppers which meet when the trunk is closed. These can vibrate against each other.

Thirdly I adjusted the stoppers used to adjust the trunk closing position. Adding Velcro to the closing surfaces meant these needed to come out slightly anyway. As they come out the latch area becomes a tighter fit, however the side stoppers become a looser fit. So you need to experiment with these. Annoyingly the optimum position depends on the temperature.

Privacy Screen. This thing can make a noise too. You can remove it to test. I've found the screws come loose and you need to tighten them up every so often.

I hope this can be helpful :)

Great info! No rattles yet, but I'll keep all of these in mind.

Anyone else have the funny noise when you open the door? Look the hinge is dry, so it makes that little fart noise? My 981 did it constantly, the 718 is starting to. HAHA

I am hearing significant rattles while accelerating, and crossing exactly 2000 RPM. Seems to come from several places, and very repeatable in normal, sport, and sport+ mode regardless of the gear I am in (manual transmission). Anyone else have this issue?

Another rattle I have tracked down on my rattle box Cayman. The plastic part of the inside hatch boot lid can vibrate against the hatch.

The cause is the clips not being fastened properly in the factory.
The temporary solution is to insert strips of foam (see photos) in the gap.
The permanent solution is to have the dealer put the clips on properly (or try yourself!)

Thanks for this!

I have experienced most of these too!

Do you ever get a slight 'whistle' from behind? It only happens at 75mph or above and isn't always there.

After reading your post, I wonder whether it is the 'high pitched rattle' you mentioned to do with the rear fluid lid covers..?

Thanks!

I had all sorts of noises from my Boxster soft top. Can't help but think the new four cylinder engine, particularly the S with bigger single turbo, might cause more vibration than na six. I never heard anything with my previous 981and 987. But forgive me, I'm not slagging off the 718. I might just have bought a pup.

One noise was actually the velcro in the side of the soft top mechanism creaking, which I fixed by spraying WD40 everywhere. Another way was to just pull the velcro fastening apart but of course it reconnects when you lower and raise the roof again.

The rear window also rattled, particularly at speed when windy, but I couldn't find any reason. It wasn't loose and was sealed fine. It went away when I pressed hard on it but you can't drive one-handed for long. Then there was a jittering which I located as literally within the roll bar on passenger side, like something inside the hollow, which is completely sealed so whatever was in there was there for good!

I removed the wind deflector for a while, thinking it was rattling in the spring catch mechanism, but actually that wasn't an issue.

Everything was wonderful with the top down or the bose turned up to max.
