Some may lament the change from a flat 6 to a 2.5-liter turbo flat-four but the new mid-engine coupe managed to lap the Nurburgring track in just 7:46.70.
According to
autoevolution the time came from Sport Auto, a German publication who is said to be the authority when it comes to Green **** lap times.
With a time of 7:46.70, the 718 Cayman S has become the second fastest 4-cylinder car to complete the lap and it almost tied with the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. That’s an accomplishment considering the competition’s V10 is delivering 530 hp, a large advantage in power compared to the 2.5-liter flat-four’s 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque.
The lap time was probably achieved thanks to a combination of improvements made to the 718 Cayman S including a turbocharger featuring the same adjustable guide vanes as those found in the 911 Turbo.
Sure the turbo has a maximum of 16 psi of boost but the vanes help provide maximum power at high revs and peak response and higher torque at low revs. In Sport and Sport Plus modes, the turbochargers will maintain higher boost pressure even when the driver lifts their foot off the throttle while they’re driving around the track aggressively.
