718 Idiosyncrasies

One week and 200 miles into 718 ownership and I'm starting to notice little things that make me wonder what the designers were thinking.

For instance, temperatures today were near 90 degrees Farenheit, cabin temps had to be significantly hotter. Who thought putting a chrome strip on the power window switches was a good idea? I practically burned two lines on my fingertips just trying to put down the windows.:crying:

How about anyone else? What quirks and/or lovable oddities have you discovered about your 718?

I don't believe the Individual Sport Chrono settings are included in the list of items stored on a key. That seems to be limited to ergonomic and comfort settings.

Edit: and now I've gone into the garage, turned the ignition on, found that the Individual settings are still there, turned the ignition off, started the car, cycled through the Sport Chrono modes a couple of times, checked the Individual settings, and found that they are there.

So I've no idea what was going on.
Mine does this randomly just sitting in the garage. Sometimes I work all day out there and hear it a lot. I have never measured the time intervals but it does it rather frequently - like once every 45 minutes or so (that's a guess). I thought it was either the electric parking brake (which is always on in the garage) or the electric locks (which are never on in the garage).
Yes I've heard this noise when I close the car door. I thought it was the parking brake as well then I look down to see the light on the parking brake still on.

I heard it too even at the showroom before buying the car, I still hear it after 5 months owning it, I think it is not an issue.

I’m interesting with Individual mode saved setting, I’ll try it tomorrow.
I have just over 500 miles on my Cayman, but a fewof things have caught my attention:

I have the standard AC, so to increase/decease the fan speed there is a momentary toggle switch. In the old days, you simply turned a knob to change the fan speed, and the rate of change was controlled by how fast you turned the knob. With the momentary toggle, one has to hold the toggle in the up or down position while the fan increases/decreases a constant rate, a slooooow rate. (probably working through a computer). It is interesting to note that it takes about the same length of time for the fan to go from full low to full high as it takes the car to go from zero to sixty!

I have a manual transmission, and there is a nice digital display on the dash that indicates what gear you are in. Except when at a stop, once the car is put into neutral, the display goes blank, and when engaging a gear the display remains blank until the car is moving about 10 mph.

When a container is in the passenger side cup holder, it perfectly blocks the driver's view of the lane change assist warning light.

Yeah, I know these are minor issues I will get used to, but it is kinda fun to point them out.

Agreed on the fan speed and temp control. I have auto climate but only use in manual mode. Yes very slow vs a dial.
It appears that it is not possible to change the volume of navigation voice guidance unless there is an audio source playing, which means that you have to listen to it, and if you want to be able to hear the nav voice on a highway with the top down, the volume will need to be awfully high. The volume is unresponsive to the volume knobs, and the areas of the relevant areas of the menu are grayed out, unavailable.

I know its a different vehicle, ( I don't have nav in my CS) but in my truck, you can only adjust the volume of the nav voice when it is saying something. I have a repeat button that will repeat the last nav instruction. during that time you can adjust the nav voice volume by using the radio volume control knob.
One of my favorite "little" features is the volume control tracking ball (A) on the multifunction steering wheel.

Set the volume you want, then switch the audio to "Aux" (I assume nothing is plugged into that input.)

Tried that; doesn't work. Doesn't respond.

Tried it; doesn't work. Goes back to low volume. Moreover, in a convertible, you need the ability to change voice volume readily with road speed.

There is no sensor on the stick that figures out what gear you are in, the ECU deduces that info from a ratio of wheel speed to engine speed.

Hence why the car needs to be moving to display that data.

That totally makes sense! ...you just reasoned that out? If so I've got some ECU-related questions for you.

Sure, let’s see how much time I have. I’ve tried tuned Subarus for the last 12 yrs, and I am getting a 718 in the future.
Very small annoyance. Every morning I start the car to the annoying sound of the parking sensors and the nav screen view of where the obstacles are in relation to the car. I would like to start up experience to include the view of the nav screen showing the Cayman silhouette flash across the screen. I've only seen it once and can't seem to get that to be the first thing I see. Other than that, which honestly seems ridiculous to write, the car is amazing!!!
Its altimeter doesn't always read accurately.

I have never had a car that had this option.

The altimeter is part of the Nav option. Car-based navs' altimeters are notoriously inaccurate partially because of vehicle interference with satellite reception ... and many vehicle-focused aftermarket nav units have eliminated the feature entirely (Example: most Garmins don't have it anymore -- I just bought a mid-level one for a road trip and it doesn't have it -- because of complaints like this one.)

What you describe is the PCM reboot screen. If you start your car less than 8 minutes or so after you last shut it down, PCM won't reboot and you'll get whatever the car was feeding/will feed you from its infotainment screen.

First thing in the morning after the car's sat overnight, see if the PCM reboot screen appears on startup. If it doesn't, then you may have a problem.

Perhaps you were in Death Valley, California? (lowest elevation -242 ft)
