This was today at the PEC in LA. They had the Cayman GT4 as well, but it escaped before I could get a pic. I don't think retail deliveries begin until spring 2020 so I was quite surprised to see it....

Not sure it translated well to the 718 platform. I like the lines of the 981 Spyder better for some reason - at least with the top up as pictured. I think it's the rear end that doesn't work as well. JMO of course.

I have to say that I vastly prefer the lines of my regular 718 Boxster. To me, the front of the Spyder looks like they added a cheap aerokit..I don't mind the rear as much, but the flowing curves of the regular 718 are, in my opinion, much better than the Spyder. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

I saw one today in NYC. (Probably the previous model). I didn't like the 'tent'...
The top really bothers me as well.

Very true, aesthetics are so subjective. Top down, I like it, including the "humps" on the rear lid, but I don't like the look of the car "top up" ....... I think the way the top's designed makes it look tacky. I'm not a big fan of the front end either, the rear I like. Opinions on this cars styling are sure to generate heated debate.

I agree about the questionable esthetics of the drop top. Another issue for me is the manual deployment of the top. Though, if I purchased a Spyder it would be a fair weather car and the top would only be up in the garage. Maybe they should have tried to design a removable hard top but that clearly is a moot point. I specced one out for fun and with the two tone interior with the top down it looks real sharp.

If I lived in SoCal where the weather permitted the top down most of the time I may have gone with a 981 Spyder or even a 987. They looked the part - a sleek coastline curiser. This rendition doesn't do it for me. The 981 rear looked sharp on the Spyder. The lines just don't flow in this design and the front faring, as mentioned by kfahmi, looks like a bolt-on mod that's more suited to a track car, which IMO, the Spyder is not. The large ducktail doesn't do anything for the car either.

I love it! In general, automobile reviewers have had nothing but positive comments. I for one really love it versus a standard 718. It is truly unique. You won’t see yourself coming and going with every other Boxster out there. AND, it’s even unique versus the abundant 911’s you see all the time. The current Pano magazine review stated “it looks spectacular “! “Better lines than the previous Spyder...”! Beauty certainty is always in the eye of the beholder. I have a PDK on order. GT Silver Metallic. Expect it first quarter 2021. Dealer said I am getting their first PDK. Exciting!

Devil's advocate: in general, do automobile reviewers ever have anything but positive comments? After all, they don't want to upset the manufacturers and be placed on a so-called "black list" in the future.

Congratulations; I agree it is beautiful and unique but a word of advice view all these reviews with more than a fair amount of skepticism. There are shills everywhere.......and it borders on shameless in the car world. To be clear Porsche is all about "invented wants" and those that work directly or indirectly for Porsche are all about selling that concept.

Have you ever owned a Porsche? I’ve owned 15. I’ve also owned many other brands also. Never owned an “exotic “ brand, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, McLaren, etc., although I’ve had the opportunity to drive some of those. Porsche makes a superior automobile versus most auto makers, in many different respects, but certainly not perfect. Own and drive a Porsche for a reasonable length of time, and you will understand what makes them special. You do get what you pay for. Can you buy really nice cars for less? Sure. And in my opinion I think you are wrong about automotive reviewers writing what the manufacturer wants to hear. I’ve read plenty of mediocre or critical reviews of various higher end cars. Everyone on this forum is entitled to their opinion. That’s what forums are for. Although I’m surprised by the negative thread regarding this special Porsche. The negative comments sure won’t affect my opinion or perspective. My perspective is from first hand experience based on previous Porsche ownership. Are yours?

I was referring to the general trend of comments about the Spyder, in this particular thread, not yours specifically. Go back and re-read the thread of comments. The comments trend toward complaints about some aspect of the car. I get that it's not for everyone. I happen to love it's uniqueness. I get that the top adds a element of inconvenience to raising and lowering the top. I think it looks "sporty" though. I'll put up with the minor inconvenience for the uniqueness. I have nothing but positive comments to make about the car...without driving it... The final test is driving the car. I've read at least 6-8 different reviews from various automotive reviewers. It was 90-95% positive comments regarding how it looks and drives (the Scotland tests). No one can convince me everyone of those reviewers are afraid to speak their honest opinion in fear of being black-balled for future testing by Porsche. Unless of course someone from some biased unreasonable perspective totally bashed the car, which I highly doubt would happen.

I think that part of the issue with negative comments may have to do with familiarity with the aesthetics of the previous model. If you are used to how the MY2015 looked, then the 718 Spyder strikes a dissonant cord.

I for one had no clue what the MY2015 looked like until I started reading this thread. I Googled it, along with the 718 and put them side by side to see the differences. Being used to the MY2018 718CS I drive, I saw nothing wrong with the new Spyder, the old Spyder looked a bit bland in the back (ok, the front too, I like the aggressive front of the 718 Spyder).

Now, this maybe heresy to someone that is familiar and loves the 2015 Spyder. Well,... peace! :D

The flying buttresses on the cloth top is another matter.Aesthetically, I couldn't care less. But these suckers are going to flutter in the wind like you won't believe.

I used to have a sailboat in the Med with an awning with similar pieces (for sun protection in the cockpit). Thankfully they were mounted with zippers, so, around 20 knots wind, I would zip them off, before they drove me nuts. The awning itself was rolled up on its frame, around 30-35 knots, which was rare.

Porsche has a cup of tea for everyone in each of its model lines... part of the beauty of their approach to things. Same with the Porsche approach to options, a la carte all the time.

Back to the Spyder, I hope folks continue to post pictures as they see them regardless of their opinions on looks. The pictures posted here solidified my back and forth on the black wheels. I think I’m going to go with them. Thanks again for posting.
