Hi i posted a little home made mod yesterday which turned out surprisingly well and the best part was it took an hour to do and cost less than $6.00 to make.
i have had requests of the how to do it so i thought i would post a Write up.

1st you will need to source the silicone led strip i used a 12mm W x 6mm D profile, i purchased from AliExpress although Fleabay also sell it, the cost per meter is 99C You will need exactly 1100 mm per spoiler

27608

Next solder a good quality cable to the strip you will need a 750mm Length then tape using black PVC making sure its sealed, continue along the top of the silicone to the end to mask off the white of the silicone.

27609

Once you have done this you will need to tape primer the silicone to the underside to allow the adhesion of double sided trim tape, once dry apply the tape

27610

27611

The next stage is to put primer along the rear edge where the led strip is to be stuck, then carefully remove the backing tape and stick down the LED strip following the contour of the rear spoile.
27612

The next stage is the trickiest the routing of wire and connection, open the trunk lid, pull down the carpets around the lock and LHS ( from the rear looking forward ) you will see the rear light cables you will need to tap into these wires using a scotch lock / tap, I chose the driving / tail light circuit as it comes on when i lock / unlock At night And comes on when the lights are turned on.
i routed the cable under the rear Spoiler trim, Then removed the trunk seal, i reinforced around the cable before putting the cable over the lip and re seating the trunk seal.
Put the carpets back and Enjoy
Everything is 100% reversible without any damage to trims or wiring

The most expensive part was the shipping at $4.00

Pretty neat. Great job!
Well thank your very much Gatorfast,
My next project is on the way...........
.......i am now in the middle of Making an electronic gizmo that’s detects the micro switched output Signal of the door handles that will trigger a 12v power source That Can be Programmed to stay on and turn off From 0 -120 seconds. This will power retro fitted under door puddle lights, for those of us who did not specify the option.

Cool looking addition, and thanks for the explanation.

To clarify the wiring, does that mean that the strip is on most of the time? In other words, is the strip on during the day with running lamps, or just at night when the night lights turn on?
I think you said just at night. What about during braking?

Hi VH,
the choice is yours,
i chose the side light option as it is on at night and when you press unlock, you could with a one way resistor have it to be on with the brakes during the day and if you include a photo cell switch, it would also be on constant with the lights on at night whilst at night only also be totally independent of the brake circuit.

thats the beauty of making it yourself

this is the current 911’s light (which mirrors my operation)

There is a Chinese company making these and they are connected to the battery. The light glows too much though in my opinion. This company makes a few interesting Aftermarket products 🤔

Hi I’ve seen that kit and its over $1200 bucks 😓 OUCH to achieve the exact same results !!!
you can add a variable resistor to the cable and have a glow as bright Or as dim as you want as the LED that i used are 100% dimmable :geek:
thats the beauty of DIY projects

I am at my desk and honestly cannot remember, but i will Explain how i found the correct wire, look at your number plate light, from the back looking at the bumper choose the rhs light, pull the frame to the left whilst pulling down and the light just pops out no tools needed.
look at the cable colour code.

Got the led strip and looking at fitting.
To clarify Andrew, when you say “pull the frame to the left whilst pulling down and the light just pops out no tools needed.” Do you mean from the inside of the boot having removed the carpet trim etc? Mines the Cayman btw.

Hi
No mate it’s even easier than that, from outside look up to the number plate light and get your fingernail under the lip whilst pulling to the side and down
Look forward to the pictures in about an hour then 😂

cheers

Getting closer but still baffled!
I can now tell the colour coding of the number plate lights, thanks, but where did you connect the led strip to that cable?
