In recent times Mercedes-AMG has been the manufacturer to beat in the 1.8- to 2.0-litre category. Leading the pack with its powerful 2.0-litre turbo engine, the German OEM scooped this award three years on the trot between 2014 and 2016.
Delivering the exhaust crackle and drama that is expected of an AMG powertrain, it was always going to take something special to prise top spot away from the 385ps engine.
And last year a worthy challenger arrived. Amid an industry focused on engine downsizing and changing regulations, Porsche decided to develop a powertrain for its Boxster and Cayman models that combined efficiency with performance.
The resulting four-cylinder turbo won the 2017 1.8- to 2.0-litre engine category, earning plaudits for both its efficiency and its performance.
And for 2018 the engine – which is both loved and hated by Porsche purists – has retained the award, taking top spot ahead of serial winners Honda and Mercedes-AMG by a comfortable 44-point margin.
For Calibre’s Carl Cunanan, the 718 powertrain represents the best of downsizing technology: “Purists may still be calling foul, but the ability to bring predictable power delivery in a lightweight package gives this engine a sum greater than the total of its parts.”
Deploying a four-cylinder unit for the first time since the 1960s, the German auto maker put efficiency at the forefront of development. The result is 6.9 l/100km (40.9mpg) fuel economy.
The turbo unit that powers the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman uses a mid-engined architecture that can unleash 300ps at 6,500rpm and 380Nm from 1,950rpm through to 4,500rpm. This means that despite turbocharging, the new engine will develop the same maximum revolution speed as its naturally aspirated predecessor.
Detailing why the 718 unit won the award, freelance journalist Nikos Kounitis said, “It is smooth and high revving despite being turbocharged. A solid and convincing engine.”
