Ten years ago, when I was 16, a friend of my family's took me for a spin on his 997 Carrera S. Until that point, I was obsessed with super sports car (Ferrari, Lamborghini...). However, this trip on the 997 made me open my teenage eyes and I realized there were many interesting sports cars out there, much more affordable and useful than Ferraris, that could still provide tones of excitement and enjoyment, Porsche being the best exponent of this segment. At this point, I became a huge enthusiast of the brand and promised myself I'd work very hard during the years to come (High school, college, and so on) so as one day I could get a Porsche sports car.

3 years ago I bought my first proper car, a brand-new Mazda Miata (I chose this car for its resemblance with the Boxster, both in looks and philosophy). At this moment I considered getting a used 987, but decided against it. I didn't want my first Porsche to be a 10-year-old car. I wanted it to be the current model on the market, so I decided to wait, knowing the right time would come sooner than later.

And this right moment has finally arrived. 10 years after my first Porsche experience, I can finally say I'm the proud owner of an (almost) brand-new Porsche 718 Cayman.

Two days ago, I took delivery of my Base 718 Cayman. It's a slightly used car with 6000 miles on the clock (from June 2018).
My initial intentions were to buy a brand-new car, but finally decided against it and went for this unit. This has saved me some money and, more importantly, I'm getting a huge amount of options, many more than the options I would have specced on a brand-new car. This unit features almost every option I wanted for certain such as Sport Seats Plus, PDLS, Parking sensors and Cruise control (yes, these are options in EU), 20" wheels... and many other fancy options I would have disregarded to keep things within budget (SC, PASM, Black wheels, tinted lights...).

Options List:

Guards Red
PDK
SportChrono
PASM
PDLS
Tinted front and rear lights
20" Satin Black Carrera Wheels
Sport Plus Seats
Full leather interior
Heated Seats
Navigation module
Gt-Sport wheel
Multifunction Heated wheel
Dual-zone climate control
Cruise control
Front and Rear Parking Sensors
Speed limit indicator
Bose sound system
Painted washer heads
Connect Plus (whatever this means)
Digital Radio
Apple Carplay
Red seatbelts
Red SC Dial
Black Exhaust tips
Floor mats
Power Steering Plus

For the moment I've just put 100 miles on the clock (basically to take it home from the dealer). My street is being re-asphalted this week, so I'm keeping the Porsche hidden in my garage. I'm dying to drive it more! Hopefully the road works will be completed before the weekend.

As you can see, it looks like a T (black wheels, tinted lights, dual tip exhaust...) and is also optioned like a T (SC, PASM, Sport Seats...). Only PTV is missing. However I've full leather seats instead of the T's sportex seats (which I'm not really fond of) and proper door handles. I'm very happy with the looks and options of the car.

It would have been nice to have PTV (even though I don't think I'll ever need it, it's a DD) and also the Porsche Sports Exhaust, though it sounds really nice even without it (cannot understand all the whine about the 718's sound). The PSE could be retrofit, but it's quite expensive. Instead, I might as well install any after-market exhaust, which would certainly sound way better.

However, there is one inexpensive option not included which is the one I'm missing the most: The 64l fuel tank instead of the standard 54l tank. It's a 150€ option. I don't get why anyone would spec the car without it. I'll have to find out if this can be retrofit for a reasonable price.

Thank you all for helping me out with the decision these last few weeks.
Childhood dream accomplished!

Cheers!

Congratulations! I wish you lots of wonderful safe times with that exceptional car. I took ownership of my first Porsche last April. I hope you have every bit of fun, enjoyment, thrills, and just irremovable smiles as I have had. My Boxster, and so is your Cayman, light years ahead of any of the BMW Z3/Z4s in every respect.

Congratulations! Purchased my first Porsche, CGTS, just a few months ago--so I know exactly how you feel. You've obviously worked hard over the last 10 years to be able to purchase a Porsche at what I'm sure many here will agree is a rather young age! On that alone, cograts again! Beautiful car! Enjoy!

PS: Full leather interior is actually a really big option on your build; it's not just the seats, it's the full leather dash with the stitching -- makes the interior look 100 times better in my opinion.
I wouldn't sweat the missing PSE, you can always get an aftermarket exhaust that will definitely sound better.
Lastly, agree, why would anyone not get the bigger gas/fuel tank...???!!!

For all it's worth, I own a Guards Red 718S with black wheels much like yours. I ordered it new and deleted the model name from the rear bumper. I've had quite a few people ask me if it's a Ferrari. I guess I (we) have the best of both worlds! A "Ferrari" one can drive every day!

Quite true. Every time I look at the front of the 718 I can't help but remembering my childhood dream car (before the 997 experience, that is), the F430. It's remarkable how similar they are. It's curious though the Ferrari was designed more than 15 years ago and how this design style still looks modern on both the 718 and the f430.

Congratulations, hope your road is all done and you're enjoying the new purchase. What area (broadly) of Spain are you in? I visit Granada a number of times each year, and love Spain in general.

Picked up my new to me CGTS last weekend, and loving it too.

They are similar for sure.

Road works (partially) done, so yes, yesterday I drove the 718 to my workplace and today I've been driving through mountain roads. It's an absolute blast.
I'm sort of missing my Miata's superb manual transmission though. Even with PDK's manual mode I feel a little bit less engaged than with my Mazda. Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd + heel&toe is one of the best feelings you can get with your pants on. This cannot be matched with an electronic paddle shifter.
Aside from this, i'm still astonished by the performance of the 718 and how comfortable and quiet it can be when cruising on the highway.

I'm around Barcelona area.

Cheers!

Doing a double downshift with the paddles (and more so with the PDK Auto) is pretty amazing feeling. Try to understand how this amazing turbo motor works in conjunction with the more amazing autoPDK and you will find new levels of enjoyment.

Congrats and I wish you well with your Porsche.
I've owned many, many sports cars in my life but my 718 Cayman is the first, functioning Porsche I've ever owned and I bought it at age 67. So you've got me beat!

I agree with your comments about the Miata. I had an NB for almost 20 years and there are times when I still miss it. Driven properly, the Miata is a very visceral, engaging car that is more fun than many "better" cars.
I do miss the heal and toe action with the Miata gearbox......I wish my PDK Cayman had a better brake pedal for left-foot braking.
Still, the Cayman is a wonderful car in its own right. Best of luck with your's.
