2018 718 GTS manual 12.5K miles and completely STOCK

After some research and previous experience with AFE dry filters, I decided to give it a try expecting to just get some better sound.

Installation is pretty straightforward albeit a bit tedious. About 1.5 hour job.

Noticed the engine 'grumble' increase even as soon as I started the car. After a bit of warm up, I gave it half throttle and immediately noticed the power increase around 3.5-5K rpm mark. WOT is glorious. It has more of the 'porsche' crescendo which seemed to cover up a little of the subaruish noise. It just screams after 5.5K rpm to redline.

My 20+ years of modding experience is telling me I've gained every bit of 7-10 hp in the mid range. I feel it more on partial throttle (50-60%).

I would highly recommend this mod. Any questions, let me know. Btw, here's the instruction I used. Make sure you don't lose the little cones that connect the carpeted and plastic rear panels to the chasis.

I have fabspeed supercup on the way along with antigravity battery and will report out how both of those combined feels (+15 hp and 80 lbs weight reduction).

I did go for the BMC filter, and also noticed a better sound and power, but the most significant difference whas the throttle respons, much better!. but to change the filter was a pita in a boxter, ended up buying the service.
highly recommended mod..

To OP, so specifically which filter did you use.
Was it the afe Magnum Flow Pro DRY S ?

If so it has less air flow than the oiled version, so ‘less’ hp benefit surely,
Like the idea of the better sound though!

Is this filter safe? In other words, does it do its job of filtering dirty air? I know from flipping the air cleaner lid (filter is sealed but is now exposed to engine compartment) on 1970-1980's domestic US cars that induction sound increases to a howl. It would seem that if the increased induction sound is only from a filter change that the filter material must be more porous or thinner in some way. I love the idea of more induction sound but worry about a flimsy filter. Thoughts?

There is only one version of the dry filter from afe.
Reason I went with this vs oil is because of the better filtration but also better performance than OEM. I also firmly believe that the oiled filter will loose its performance over a short period of time as the oil starts to clot the filter with dirt. Also didn't go with BMC because everyone in the porsche community seemed to have it and I just wanted to try something different and base it heavily on my own experience.

One thing to note is that just some of the other cars I've owned and modified in the past showed more power with dry than oil.

The Dry filter that OP got is IMO the happy medium. It doesn't flow as much as the Oiled version, but that is only because it filters to a higher degree.

Oiled filters in my experience are meant for more routine maintainability and because of the extremely high flow characteristics, they use oil as an additional media to catch the ultra fine material.

I asked why dry vs. oiled, only because I wanted to know the depth of research and what his findings were that led to his choice. For me, the added filtration of the dry would be preferred. It's still an improvement over stock!

Ha, we replied at the same time! This is what I suspected, dry being the happy medium (pun intended) for the media.

The dry filter is only three layer, but it’s different material and offers better filtration. Hence the slightly less flow rating for the dry vs. oiled.

As I said earlier, the oiled filters are not as good at filtration, but offer greater flow. In order to make up for the less filtration, they use oil to grab fine particulates. Even with oil, it still doesn’t reach the filtration level of a proper dry.

OEM will generally provide the best filtration, but the AFE dry is pretty close.

Thank you for the explanation.

Would you, please, point me on the dry filter you are talking about. Unfortunately, i haven't found it on AFe web-site.

Scroll down to the reviews; I wouldn't have any problems believing his results. Also one thinng to note is that my original filter had lots of debris from 12.5K miles of use, so I think this was a big factor in feeling the power difference as well.
