blew rear tire on the way to the car show!

Hey guys! Ran over a brick on the freeway and blew out the passenger side rear. Being 5 hours away from home and sitting on the side of the freeway I called around tire shops while I'm sitting here waiting for the tow truck. Discount Tires has two tires in stock but they're not Michelin 4s. He said they're called Michelin Pilot Super Sports. He said they are the older version. I have no choice but to get them or else I would have to wait Monday to have 4s shipped in. Should I be fine with these? Tow company will tow me to Discount Tires and they can have it done in about an hour. Handling should be fine you think especially that I have the Rennsport Dragon Rally here in June?

I'd check local tire stores for a pair of used take offs of correct size with sufficient tread to tide you over until you return home and can order what you want. Otherwise, you are stuck with Super Sports for the duration. Then again, Super Sports may be fine for your use case.

Yes, they were the gold standard before the PS4S. I would ask for the dates on the tires. They may be near their best by date.

I would get them. Porsche rated and Michelin. You can't go far wrong.

personally, given your distance take whatever they have even if non-P and get you and the car home.

The upside is that you and your car are fine. Tyre's can be replaced. I was always told to replace front and rear tyres in pairs so if you can get two rears you should be good to go until you return home. Balance will be important and since you're not tracking alignment can wait till you get the newer tyres.
Stay safe and enjoy the festivities. Can't wait to see your Vids of the Rennsport.....

Are the Super Sports good tires?
Yes. Better stability than PS4S more precise, good grip if it has some heat. Better at high speed too. From some perspective, it's successor, the PS4S is a step back, if you consider sporty usage. I really really like the Pilot Supersport.

As a daily, the PS4S is better, as it has more comfort, and more grip when the tire is a bit cold.

I would not recommend to have PSS only to the back and PS4S to front, if you drive below 20 degrees Celsius, as the PSS has lower grip below that temperature. It needs some heat.

Rear tires wear faster than fronts. This will set you up for an easy four tire replacement later on. Sounds like a good move to go with the PSSs now! Good luck. Glad you are ok!

I had great experience with the Super Sport tires on my former 911. They were better than Pirelli PZero's. As @Treemagnet suggest, get the date on them. But even if they are a little on the older side, as long as they were stored indoors in a climate controlled area, they should be good.

Sorry for your blow out. Hope you get back on the road quickly.

So that fronts still have lots of tread so I should be fine running 4s and Pilot in the rear for RDR?

Oh, man, a BRICK???? You hit a brick, that could have been much worse than a tire blow out.

Glad it's only a tire.

Safe motoring.

One more thing to look for on the highway.

Couldn't really be a brick

could it?
I understood it as - something big and sharp - that punctured the tyre, not an actual house brick.

ONLY if you dont drive in colder weather.
again, the PSS is a very good tire, but much worse in colder temperature that the PS4S and could cause oversteering in cold.
What is the average tempreature you use the car ?

the trash on the roads here in the US

I saw a sledge hammer (probably an 8# (big one) lying in the road. Thankfully in daylight and could see it will enough ahead of time

there's been shattered pallets, tool boxes, tire carcasses from semi trucks (esp. in summer heat), pieces of lumber, drywall, chunks of demolished concrete

people throw this stuff into their trucks and don't seem to care if its secured down
