This is a pretty inexpensive replacement filter for the OEM. Does it really make a difference or is it "just a good thing to do"?

You will not notice any power gains - but with full bolt ons and a tune where the engine is flowing more air, the gains would be slightly better - as if a cherry on the sundae. You will notice a very slight increase in intake / turbo sound. I've heard this in person on the 718 and 991.2 Carrera. Naturally aspirated cars - it's harder to discern any difference.

The design of the oiled filter is that you have larger pores for air to travel through, while the oil catches the particulate that would otherwise go through. Depending on how often you drive, you'll need to clean / re-oil the filter every year or so.

It’s pretty easy to install. BMC filters are used as oem on the GT3 as well

I've yet to see a filter make power on our dyno... But if you like the way it looks go for it..

I was asking because I thought I might have it done when getting my X-pipes installed. I can't believe it only took up to 45 minutes. Thanks for the link.
