Hello, I am looking at picking up a 718 Cayman that does not have the PSE. I really like it and wanted to know if its possible to add that to a car that doesn't come with it factory?

Anyone have any info on that?

Yes you can, take a look at Porsches Tequipment Accessories Finder.
But the PSE on 718 aint as good as on 981 and its a different kind of exhaust all together.

There is a Sound aktor on the torpedo wall and most of us have disconnected it because it is producing something like a one noted rumble.
It also rumbles more in sport mode and when the PSE is open.

With it disconnected you cant really hear a difference if the PSE is open!!
In sport mode you can hear it but in normal/sport+ the difference is really small.

Search the forum for sound aktor and you will find alot of info :)

How does the sport exhaust compare to the stock exhaust? Does it open valves that are activated with the PSE button? Is it more free flowing and make additional power when active?
Exhaust with PSE have a tad smaller mufflers and there is only a valve on the muffler on the passanger side.
In normal the PSE is closed by default but can be open with the button.
Sport/Sport+ the valve is open by default but can be closed.
PSE is always closed under 50kmh/2000rpm.

No additional power or such and not much extra noise either.
The sound actor also changes note depending on driver mode/PSE open/closed, disconnect it and one can really hear that the PSE does not add as much noise as on 981

I tested with and without the PSE. The difference was marginal and not worth the asking price in my opinion so didn't order it.

What a lot of people don't realise is most of the sound difference you hear is from the changes in the engine and soundaktor from SPORT mode being enabled, and not the minor difference from the sport exhaust. Also something else not every knows is that you get more exhaust noises in Sport mode compared to Sport+ mode (try it), my non PSE 718 in Sport mode makes a lot more noise and pops and bangs than a 718 with PSE in Sports+ mode.

Sport+ with PSE on track sound nearly as Sport with bangs on down shifts, but thats more to the style of driving.
PSE is not Worth it imho, but if you do the 981 mod, then sounds Alot!

Does this mod involve dumping the 4 pot and installing a Flat 6?! >:D
:D

Thats was a good one!
But it is much easier then that, there is a pipe connecting the two mufflers right infront of the exhaust tips.
If you move the clamp and create a gap thats 2-5mm your gonna transform the exhaust note - last pic is from my own car when i was testing it
Also you can mod the PSE valve so its Always open.

If you like it then you can like this so the clamp is still in use.
And by sliding it you can change the note or Close it so its back to stock.

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but this is an interesting mod and I'm curious what changes do you notice most while doing the adjustment? I had a 981 previously and hadn't heard of this. Pity!

I am mostly curious because I just installed the Fabspeed turbo-back SuperCup on my 718 Cayman S, complete with the high-flow cat, a couple of weeks ago. It sounds good, but and even with the soundaktor disconnected, it is too loud for me in Sport mode (moderate, booming bass in the cabin at low RPM between 1000-1800, at a frequency which I'm sensitive to that makes my ears ring a little when driving mildly in light throttle situations around the city).

So I'm thinking to either go back to stock or something which mutes the volume a little. This mod might be an interesting compromise since I don't really want to spend much more than I already have on this existing exhaust.

You do get more of a low end growl but no drone
With 2mm opening in sport with pse open it is loud but not to loud, imo
If you go for 4-5mm then it is LOUD!!

Sounds like a great free and easy(?) mod to get some extra growl.
I was considering a PSE but this seems well worth trying...

Has anyone else tried it on their 718?

Could anyone provide a step by step guide (preferably with pics) to doing this for mechanical idiots such as me?
Thanks a million ?

I take $ and cash!

Behind the exhaust tips you have a pipe (plus clamp) that connects the two mufflers.
Just loosen the bolts and slide the sideways so you have a small opening.

I'm so glad the MY19 has the PSE as standard equipment i.e. I didn't pay for it. Phew.

First plan when she arrives in Feb is to disconnect the sound ak.

Would your 2mm mod be ok during the break in period?

For that i have no answer, but i cant see how it should be a bad thing.
First disconnect the sound aktor ( it looks as newar cars still have it but the Control moduled is moved)
Drive around a couple of Days then you slide the clamp and decide if you like it :)

Exhaust mod

Thanks very much Johan, I'll give this a go.
Now where did I put my socket set.... :) :)

[/B]
Hi, had some time and tried this out with various sizes of gap. I found that about a 3mm gap gives an ideal growl far better than the stock exhaust note on my base Cayman.
Too much of a gap (and I tried up to 10mm) and the sound gets boomier and maybe I'm imagining it but the pops and crackles are reduced(?) in sports mode.
Great upgrade! Should be more widely known - I'm sure many owners would be pleased with the end result.
Thanks to Johan for the info:)

Did you the cut the trapezoid shape cape into the pipe? When I slide the clamp and slide towards the passenger side, there is no cutout in the pipe. Are you leaving the pipe completely unconnected? Thanks in advance.
