I have an'18 Cayman with the CarPlay option ( no nav). Suddenly the car won't pick up my phone. The bluetooth picks up my phone. But all of a sudden the CarPlay won't work. I shut my phone off and restarted it and that didn't help. It has always worked before.
Can anyone offer some help?
Thanks

Happened to me at the beginning. I had no problem after I connected the iPhone after I started the engine. After a few times, it doesn't seem to mind what is the starting sequence.

Also, try a different Thunderbolt cable. It may be charging but not communicating.

Make sure you use the correct cable - either a real Apple cable or a cable that complies with the Apple certification. With a correct cable mine usually works but it will not work at all with non certified cables.

Many times when I plug in my iPhone (with an Apple cable and after starting the engine), CarPlay takes a long time to acknowledge the connection and start. It's sometimes very quick (within a second or two) but sometimes it takes on the order of a minute or so. I have yet to figure out what causes the delay or any rhyme or reason for the variable length. If I start pressing buttons, such as "Car" or "Home" this seems to help speed up the starting process, but I can't confirm that.

I also have a '18 Cayman without nav option (just CarPlay).

I just upgraded Carmen the Cayman's iPhone to iOS 13.1.2 and then took it on a PCA drive. It was working on my way to the rendezvous, got out, signed the release and chatted, and then when we got back in and started the drive, CarPlay wouldn't start. So when we got almost to our destination and stopped for a pee break, I turned the car off and filled the tank, chatted with a few folks and then we restarted. It took a little longer than normal, but it then started up. After the distillery tour, I started it up to go home and again, it took a longer time than normal to start, but it did. Looks different on the PCM so I need to play with it. There was a settings icon that wasn't there before so will investigate the settings to see if I can speed it up.

I got the iOS 13 too, but I haven't driven the car yet. Not worth the hassle to have the car brought down from the racks, so I can test it. Wednesday will be the day, when we go foliage peeping in the Catskills.

Please keep us posted on anything new about the settings.

Well, I took a trip down to the garage and played with it. First off: Remove your car from CarPlay on your iPhone. You will gain applications and functionality if redo your connection to the car. Before I did so, when I first got into Carmen, my iPhone automatically started up from off as usual, I punched in my PIN and after a while, CarPlay showed up. It only had the apps that were there before the upgrade. I hit the Porsche button and untethered the iPhone, and CarPlay, as you would expect, disappeared from the PCM menu. I removed my car from CarPlay on the iPhone, turned off the phone and plugged it back in with it still off. Left the car.

Waited a minute, went back to the car. Got in and opened the center console lid but the iPhone didn't automatically start up. Started the iPhone and closed the lid. Pushed the voice connection button on the stalk and CarPlay immediately showed up in the PCM. I pushed the CarPlay menu icon, and a message showed up that I needed to log in with the PIN on the phone. Did that, and CarPlay's menu showed up with the addition of at least the Calendar app and the Settings button. To get out of the car, I turned off the iPhone but, and this is interesting, the CarPlay button remains in the PCM. I'm assuming that means it will be active immediately when I turn the iPhone back on, of if I leave the iPhone on, it will tell me to use my PIN. I'll have to do my battery use experiment again to see if it still drains the iPhone if you don't turn it off. Kind of think it will.

There isn't much to the Settings menu item, but I did set the Dark to switch automatically on or off. Here is a link to the brief tutorial on Apple's site.

Not sure what's happening with CarPlay. Tell Siri to play an artist and it says ok, then nothing happens or it will look like it's queuing up and playing, but no sound. I'll try the unpairing and repairing to see if that cures anything.

The mapping also seems to be off. The icon illustrating the cars position is off. It runs parallel to the road, but not centered on the road. In some instances, there are also roads parallel to the one travelled and it looks as if that's where the car is located on the map.

It is my opinion Apple CarPlay, even in the latest IOS13 version, is still not fully ready for Prime Time. I have a dedicated iPhone 7 in the cell phone compartment, spent many hours optimizing and experimenting, and do indeed now have a mostly reliable system that mostly works as advertised. The key word in the last sentence is “mostly” as I periodically experience all the bugs described above. I use Pandora almost all the time so I just decided these bugs are the nature of the beast, cannot be eliminated, and rebooting the phone to get the **** thing to work once a week or so is the quid pro quo for safely using and enjoying Pandora radio stations. It is also a necessary pain in the butt to remove the phone from the car every few weeks and update apps etc.

I've said this in other threads on the subject:

These bugaboos -- I experience most of them, as well -- are all about PCM's interface with CarPlay. They have nothing to do with Apple. I say this because in other cars by other marques (Ford and Dodge are two that I have first-hand experience with, and recently), CarPlay functionality is absolutely seamless and hiccup-free.

So a statement like 'Apple CarPlay ... is still not fully ready for Prime Time' is not accurate. What would be accurate is to add 'PCM's integration with' to the beginning of that sentence.

iOS 13 adds another irritant (at least to me) to this: the Apple Maps screen defaults to suggested Destinations/routing view when it activates in CarPlay, and these boxes pop back up after the rear-view camera is enabled, then disabled. (There's no way to turn the boxes off, too -- that, incidentally, is an Apple issue). It drives me bat---- crazy.

My suggestion is to inquire about any PCM software update after your car's been delivered. If none exists, then all we can do is hope that PCM5 addresses the issues.

My own experience with Apple CarPlay:

1) Get an Apple certified cable - it has to say so on the box

2) Make sure there’s no GPS interference from another device in the car eg I had an onboard camera that was interfering with the GPS on my iphone.

I recently upgraded from iphone7 to iphone 11. Whew! CarPlay was not affected by the switch!

Thanks for that insight about PCM vs Apple being the root of the bugs. I think my first service is at 8K miles and I will certainly address a PCM update, if one exists, at that time with the servicing dealer.

I have always been a big GPS user and have had relied on native nav systems for a lot of years. I know this is contrary to most users experience and preference but I really like the Porsche native nav system and exclusively use it. I think it is much easier to use, much more intuitive, much better behaved, and offers a much better display than any of the iPhone based nav systems. The native Porsche system also has the big advantage, I think, of not phoning home in support of Google, Apple‘s, or anyone else’s data mining efforts. I can’t completely avoid these two entities from monitoring my behavior but I like trying to minimize it when reasonably possible.

This bit from the CarPlay manual I linked to above doesn't address permanently stopping that annoying behavior, but it is just a push of the right icon (but it would be nice to be able to disable the dashboard):
  • Switch between CarPlay Dashboard and CarPlay Home: CarPlay Dashboard displays several items you likely want to view or control, such as driving directions, audio playback, and suggestions from Siri. CarPlay Home shows all your CarPlay apps organized into pages.
To go to CarPlay Home, tap
    the Home button
on the touchscreen, or turn the rotary knob to select
    the Home button
    , then press the knob.
To go to CarPlay Dashboard, tap
    the Dashboard button
, or turn the rotary knob to select
    the Dashboard button
    , then press the knob.

Tried the iOS 13 based Car Play today for the first time. Just plugged the phone in with my 3d party Thunderbird data cable and worked without a hitch. I use Google Maps. Momentarily I tried the new partial screen to look for gas stations, it brought up Apple Maps, seemed ok.

I have Porsche Nav and will keep it, as navigation of the last resort (ie. I forgot my phone) Nice or otherwise (and it is not nice), it doesn’t know that the street I live on becomes pedestrian at the local Community College, and insists vociferously to barge through the ‘do not enter’ signs... Even insists on a u-turn to go back and barge through. For me it has no credibility to navigate in an unknown city...

It is interesting as when I updated to IOS 13 it worked fine and then my second trip with it, it stopped working. Been working ever since though. I really like using the navigation apps over the Porsche navigation. I bought this car “off the rack” and wouldn’t have speccd Nav had I ordered it. I would give anything to trade Nav for PASM.
