Just got CarPlay parts from Porsche Marin (cheaper for this particular parts than suncoast and is within my physical reach). My base 718 cayman comes with navigation but no voice control. Sales confirmed that no additional parts were needed besides the CarPlay module.
I will do a DIY installation and then get it activated at a dealership. Will keep this forum posted.
PS: I was amazed to see the components came from for different countries: Germany, Romania, Czech and US.
Update on this thread(Oct 2020):
I eventually returned the parts. No dealerships in my area were interested in activating it for me -- surprisingly including the service department of the same dealership I purchased the parts from. The parts guy were really nice, but the service department didn't even reply emails from their own parts guys.
One of the dealerships was direct enough to tell me that their business model relied on sales of parts and labor; Two dealerships told me that retrofit instructions published by Porsche indicate replacing steering column switch, installing USB components before programming (I don't think that's needed); The other two dealerships simply didn't bother following up with me.
My takeaway is that the only useful part of the parts is the activation code. I heard (haven't verify) that PIWIS 3 tool might be useful. I might eventually purchase a new activation code and use the tool to activate it, along with all other benefit the tool may bring. But at this moment, I am just gonna chill...
