Just got CarPlay parts from Porsche Marin (cheaper for this particular parts than suncoast and is within my physical reach). My base 718 cayman comes with navigation but no voice control. Sales confirmed that no additional parts were needed besides the CarPlay module.

I will do a DIY installation and then get it activated at a dealership. Will keep this forum posted.

PS: I was amazed to see the components came from for different countries: Germany, Romania, Czech and US.

My takeaway is that the only useful part of the parts is the activation code. I heard (haven't verify) that PIWIS 3 tool might be useful. I might eventually purchase a new activation code and use the tool to activate it, along with all other benefit the tool may bring. But at this moment, I am just gonna chill...

The central piece of those parts is a USB hub, and a license key. My limited understanding is that 718 doesn't have wireless CarPlay. So I guess the parts are needed to make connections between the head unit and iPhone. By looking at the all hardware alone, it's definitely not worth $540 . Once I get those installed, I still need to go to the dealership to get it unlocked.

Would love to learn how to enable CarPlay without installing those parts.

for ~$250 they will unlock carplay and android auto. you will access it from the usb in the glovebox.

I guess all that hardware is to put a USB in the center console?

I'm not sure what you are referring to regarding wireless carplay. I didn't mention it and it's not possible without a dongle.

Thanks for sharing this MikePhDPE! I read that before but had security concerns.

The porsche parts come with two USB ports, one for glovebox, and one for center console. The glove box usb port already exist so I guess that's redundant. I haven't started the installation yet but my guess is that the USB hub does nothing but splits the signal between enter console and glovebox. If our existing usb port is already wired the way to support carplay, then I guess a solo software unlock is sufficient. I mentioned wireless because I forgot that glovebox USB might be just enough to establish the link. So I guess you are right :). I doubt that a dealer would do the unlock without the license key. If they do, then the parts is useless.

No offense to the vendor, but being in software industry for a long time, I am more concerned about potential security issues to plugin a random flash driver to my car and my laptop and have someone remote access my laptop (according to the description in that link).

Yeah I would be curious if just installing/unlocking the software would be sufficient to get CarPlay to work through the glovebox USB port. In theory, I don't see why it wouldn't. Definitely keep us posted and take pictures, lots of pictures. I was going to do this myself, but then ended up with a car with CarPlay already. Still very curious.

It has been confirmed by users that this does allow CarPlay to function using the glove box USB port. I haven't done the install so can't confirm.

Still trying to understand if I can get CarPlay working in a 2018 that did not come with Carplay from the factory. It is silly how hard it is to get a straight answer on this question....
Yes you can. You need to buy the software, this is close to the cheapest I had found.

You then a local Porsche dealership to install for you. Basically all they’re doing is putting in the software license code to activate CarPlay on your car; the software is already built in just not activated. Now some dealerships will tell you that it can’t be done, others will tell you that you need additional hardware. I don’t believe you need anything of the sort, and it can be done. At most the only thing you need is to run the usb cable to your center console (looks like the cable/harness is included in the liner above) although others here have suggested but have not confirmed that the USB port in your glovebox may work without running any extra splitters/harnesses/cables.

PS. Ignore the dealership that says you need Navi or the left steering wheel stalk with the voice button on the side—you don’t. Even without that you can activate Siri by just saying Hey Siri or by pressing the “home” button on the CarPlay screen.

Hi all - Can anyone point me to a thread or confirm that if i have a 2017 718 Boxster S - No Nav, No Connect or Connect plus... that I can add Carplay by simply having the dealer add the activation code and then use the glove box usb? Has anyone had success first hand? Dealer are quoting me 2k+ to do the install on top of the install code / non nav parts that suncoast sells. I could care less about the voice button on the stalk and i can easily hide a wire from the glove box. I'm getting ready to buy a highly spec'ed 718 but I'm really annoyed with not having this feature.

I'm not sure what hardware you need but I think you are talking about this:

You can email them and check.

Good thing you did.
You dont need to change USB port, you only need activation, which can be done easily :)

I just bought the Carplay parts from the dealer and had it installed in my Boxster by the same dealer….and the dealer is Porsche Marin. They did a nice job, although it wasn’t cheap.
