I took my Cayman S autocrossing today with my 20 year old son. WE have owned the car for a total of three days. We had a blast!!!! Times were not great, as we were just learning the car. We managed times in the 43s were the top cars were in the 39s. Car was far more capable then the drivers. We ran the stock Perelli's at 32 psi. We kept the PDK in auto to keep things simple. Oh, ....and we had the spoiler up-lol. Off the line the car seemed to hesitate about a quarter second before it would launch, this seemed to mess with our rhythm and was frustrating. We don't have PDK. We loved the acceleration and low end torque. We are coming from a 84 911 which is lethargic below 4,000 RPMs. I had a tenancy to lift too much (I was in shock with the speed I would get on the straights). I need to work on modulating the power instead of a total lift of the accelerator. We ran with and with out the traction control/PMS. We preferred PMS off. With it on, it felt like we were not getting full power while accelerating after the apex (still turning). The Cayman was very predictable with it off and a lot of fun. Oh and by the way, my 20 year old beat me by half a second.

I look to autocross mine next year. This year I focused on track days. The 718 screams autocross. I can't wait to experience it. Good on you!

Yes Joshua, I thought stability management would make my life easier by keep the car under control, but it was unnecessary.

Don, I don't have any of the cool track toys like Sport Seats, PASM, Sports Chrono or Torque Vectoring. Although those woulda been nice, they woulda added quite a bit to the price. I have always let people (I trust) drive my cars. I taught my son to drive a stick in my 911. I let my daughter take a friend to lunch in the Cayman. I have loaned my 911 out to 20 year olds for dances and weddings. I want to share my love for these machines.

Doug, glad u are tracking yours. I haven't decided if I am going to track mine, yet. I think I need to do at least one DE to really find out what the car is capable of. Since mine is a daily driver, not sure how much I want to risk and abuse mine on a track... but I sure feel the urge.

You should definitely take it to a DE event. The PCA DE events are really well run and safe. At the beginner level there is virtually no risk to your car. You go at a speed you are comfortable with. There's almost no abuse at the speeds in the beginner groups. I'd take it out for a one day DE PCA event at a track near you and see what you think.
