Hi,

I have the black tail tips option on my exhaust.

Now mostly through the first Winter I can see the start of corrosion on the tips (car is at 8k miles and 10 months old).

What can I use to clean and protect the exhaust tips?

I'm concerned the black coating (is it a coating?) could be removed by aggressive cleaners.

Thanks!

Things you can use to remove rust:
vinegar (white) take a rag make it wet with the vinegar en wrap the rag around the tip(s) the longer you wait the more effect to loosen the rust
metal polish
double 00 steel wool

If they are a chrome like coating - you can have them clear ceramic coated. We use Ceramic Pro to coat our PVD black satin tips for an extra level of protection.

As did I. In fact, I think there is a variation of Ceramic Pro that is specifically designed for high heat surfaces. My car is still too young to see any problems, but the sealant is supposed to make it easy to clean the pipes out.

We use the wheel and caliper strength variant for its durability under high heat conditions.

Be very careful trying to clean those tips & I wouldn't go even remotely close to them with steel wool if I were you. I had exactly the same problem with the tips on my car & actually removed some of the finish with only a rag & Solvol Autosol metal polish. I've used that stuff for years & never previously experienced even the most minor of problems. The thing is not only did the polish remove the finish, but the pits weren't improved at all. Fortunately the tips were replaced under warranty but the quality is absolutely appalling. I actually asked if I could have them swopped out for the regular chrome ones but apparently they could only offer like for like. Checking used vehicles in the OPC revealed that black tips & pitting is the norm rather than the exception. I've now started cleaning & oiling mine the following day after every use. :(

Not only do they pit badly , I have black gloss 20s and have noticed that only after 2k they are starting to show signs of pitting I guess by just the normal abrasive substances that we encounter on our daily drives.. personally I would not order them again.... can you get your alloys ppfed ?

It seems to be a problem for P full stop. The Macan Forum is full of issues of the black tips. I personally had the black tips on the Macan replaced twice. The first time after 8k miles. The second set pitted within one tank of fuel. Those were replaced just before I sold the car. The current tips on the 718 are GTechniq coated with the same stuff which goes on the brake calipers. It doesn't make one iota difference. I'll have them list it as a warranty issue when I have the wheels swapped in March. We'll go from there..

As many of you know, I had issues with my black tips as well -- IIRC, I was the first to note the pitting and deterioration on this forum.

I swapped mine out in favor of matte black, single-wall Soul X-pipe tips a few months back. Better in every respect.

Frankly, I'm quite surprised that Porsche hasn't addressed this with a revised part -- or with eliminating the part altogether. By comparison, I had OEM tips in a similar black 'chrome' on my BMW 2 Series, and they were as-new 2.5 years after I installed them on the day after I took delivery of that car. Whoever is making that part for Porsche needs to be phased out of the VW AG supplier chain ...

Hi,

I was just looking up at the pipes tips on mine today after seeing an odd water drip there (will have to follow that up with Porsche after the lockdown, after 4 days dry in the garage I wouldnt expect it to be condensation, another subject ...), and I found out there is quite a bit of rust starting to build up there.
Mine are the strandard chrome ones, but same rusty issue - I was thinking giving them a good clean over the weekend - looking for options that wont ruin the chrome.

...white vinegar .. ? some youtube videos are pointing at some household cleaning products too ... anyone here have a favorit that works well ?

thanks -

Agreed! I stupidly used a stainless steel brush on the inside of the tips and easily wore through the coating down to the metal. Fortunately they will soot up pretty quickly to cover the bare spot. I’m also thinking maybe a quick shot of BBQ black paint may cover it up. Glad I didn’t scratch the outsides! I’ll be putting a ceramic coating on them. I’ve got some leftover Gyeon Rim. I used to have a Panamera with the SS sports exhaust and never had a problem cleaning the tips. But in a momentary lapse of concentration I grabbed the brush out of habit and used it on the black tips of the Boxster.
