I have purchased several travel cups to include the Porsche travel cup* and none seem to fit and be secure. I gave up looking after several failed purchases......now we put a cooler in the front trunk or in the passenger footwell.

The cupholders are adjustable, so there's no shape, model, or 'type' that fits them better than another. That said, as has been noted before, their location is not ideal. For the driver's side one, any sort of vessel that tends to leak, splash, or gather condensation will inevitably endanger the center console controls -- and it'll only take one spill to ruin some of that.

That's why a thermal mug that not only completely seals when closed, but is both lock-able and operable with one hand -- even from locked -- is the best way to go. I personally use this 20-ounce Zojirushi thermal mug. It's by far the best thermal mug I've ever used -- so much so that I have a second that I use around the condo instead of a regular mug. It's made from top-quality materials, light, easy to clean, and absolutely spill-proof to the point where you can throw it to someone else and it won't leak a drop -- and a venti anything from Starbucks fits perfectly.

It's rather tall (a shorter 16-ounce model is available); that's really the only drawback. But I have no qualms using this daily in not only the 718's cupholders, but on its side in the passenger seat. It's that good and that trustworthy.

This is one of the few universal complaints about Porsches, and it's the same in the 911. I'll bet the design engineers at Porsche have contended with this for years. What do other high level sports car manufacturers do in this area?

These are "cupholders" in name only........virtually useless.
Not if you use what I use. ;)

But I get it. Your garden-variety Big Gulp/coffee shop cup/gas-station thermal mug isn't going to work in them. Then again, who would use those vessels in a stiffly sprung two-seat rocket-sled Porsche?

There is no such thing as the perfect cupholder in cars such as ours. Yet, there are solutions that work. I offered up one. Any others?

@Viffermike I thought by calling them "virtually useless" I was being extraordinarily kind. That is, I could have simply called them "useless".

I don't mean to be argumentative here -- merely contrarian in that with the right accessory (and, at less than $30, not an expensive accessory) the cupholders work fine. They do in my case -- including on a multi-thousand-mile road trip.

So, please retain the 'virtually' -- though I contend that even the word 'useless' is strong.

Besides: We should be thankful that there are even cupholders in the 718. Cars such as the Lexus LFA, the first-gen Mercedes SLK, and the E46 M3 didn't have any, and most German manufacturers -- including Porsche -- resisted even putting them in until the late 1990s.

Where as in in the last 8 years of 987 Boxster, 981 Boxster and now 718 Cayman I have yet to find anything that would leave me confident that they won't fall out of the cup holders. Hence why I don't use them and think that they are just an over engineered work of art.

Try a Zojirushi thermal mug. Trust me on this. Part of the reason it works is because it's not tapered like many thermal mugs are to -- wait for it! -- fit in automotive cupholders.

+1 I had the pick of the showroom cabinets when I picked up my new 718 and immediately went for a matching pair of the thermal mugs....1st commute with a full cup and every time I accelerated or turned a corner I was having to steady the cup eventually gave up and hold it between my thighs now!

Accepting that the cupholders are adjustable, the problem seems to be that the weight of a tall mug levers it loose allowing it to move around...I think its unlikely to fall out in all but the most extreme maneovere but it is just annoying having ti wobble around!

These thermal mugs also work too well....a cup of hot coffee is still to hot to drink when I finish my commute. I even left one cup undrunk and it plenty warm enough to drink during my commute back home...I have learn't to make the coffee up before walking the dog in the morning and leave it with the lid off to cool before heading to the car!
