So I’ve noticed a slow puncture on the passenger side rear wheel thanks to TPMS.

I was looking for some advice as to whether this can repaired or if I need a new tyre.

It’s done 3000 miles. If I replace the tyre, like-for-like, do you think there’ll be any noticeable difference in the drive as one tyre will be 3000 miles older than the other? How much difference is terms of tread would you say is “too much?”

I’ll take it to the tyre shop but thought I’d ask on here just in case they and stitch me up (rather than the tyre).

Forgot to mention. The difference in tread needs to be < ~3/32 if you have a LSD, not sure if it matters to an open diff, but it's going to affect handling if it's much more than that.

Note if you still have a lot of tread left and don't want to replace both tires, you can shave the new tire to match. I've done it before, just beware it voids the new tires warranty.

Hi Saf

As has already been said, it is very close the the sidewall so expect it is unrepairable

As much as it hurts financially, there are many reasons why you should get it replaced

If the other tyres are nearly new then a new tyre will need to be replaced in the same cycle as the others, it is a performance car and should have no weakness in the tyres, you will always have a nagging doubt if you only try and repair it, the 4 tyres are the only contact patch your car has with the road

I have never ever taken any liberties with my car tyres as they have saved me on more than one occasion in my lifetime. I always buy premium tyres suitable for that vehicle

Bad timing for you but would advise it is replaced

I saw recently that TireRack will shave new tires to match tread wear on the opposed surviving tire. I don't know what others think of this, but if it halves the cost of replacing both tires, it may be worth looking into.

nope. will need to be replaced.

3k miles is a weird zone.

Personally, I'd just buy 2 new ones, but I have PTV so it's more important. Or you could have tirerack shave one a few tenths. Do you have PTV? The mileage difference will be much more important if you have the LSD than if not.

+1 on replacing. I once got a nail similarly on a tire with 400 miles on it. It was replaced but that delta in mileage was minimal so no issue. Others have provided some good input on how to proceed.

sorry Saf but I agree that tyre is toast

at 3000 miles I don't think you will have a problem replacing one tyre on the axle

just bad luck

Sorry to hear about this man, don't even chance the repair that close to the sidewall.

I know it hurts but go for a replacement. Personally I would replace both tyres on the axle and keep the other part worn just in case.

Camskill is the cheapest online tyre vendor...

I picked up a screw in one of my rears on my GT350 in virtually the same spot relative to the sidewall. I plugged it myself and it held pressure perfectly. This was in early October and I didn't feel a need to replace till spring. My plan was to replace both tires. As it turned out, I sold the car to the dealer that sold me the car. As others have said, just replace the tire. Not worth risking life and limb.

After more closely reviewing the ops pictures, you can clearly see that the nail is comfortably in the tread contact area. In fact, the shank of that nail should be approx a quarter inch inside the contact patch. I think that tire could be safely plugged and patched. Wouldn't hurt to take it to a tire repair center for their opinion.

Mine on the other hand was outside the contact patch and over the sidewall radius. If it were me, I'd look into getting it repaired.

Thanks for responding guys. Much love.

Have been advised that it’s too close to the wall for repairing. Appreciate the advice regarding plugging. I’ll look into this but unlikely that I’ll take this option. Have ordered a new tyre but will have to wait until Weds to get it fitted.

Didn’t know that tyre shaving was even a thing. This sounds like the ideal option for me. I’ll double check the tread and post back the differences here so we can see if it is indeed worth shaving the tyres.

Thanks again for your input. You guys are awesome.

I got a nail in the same spot at about 600 miles. I plugged it. I have about 4500 now and haven’t lost any air. If it starts leaking I’ll pull the plug out and put another one in.
This is very temping. Just don’t trust myself enough. I put up a bracket less shelf that’s never been straight. Also my TV is still slightly on the piss from 4 years ago.

I had a puncture in a rear that was further away from the sidewall and my dealer, who does patch Porsche tyres have, said "no, on internal exam, it was too close to the sidewall".

I only had 3000 km up so no modification for wear was done on the replacement. Pirelli PZero. I'm now almost due for new tyres all 'round.
