I have a 2017 Cayman S and I found the response at low rpm sometimes very hesitant. E.g. 2000rpm in 2nd gear. Few days ago I tried to merge into a multi-lane highway and I floored the gas pedal and it still wouldn't pick up. This is so embarrassing because I am not sure if one is supposed to downshift to 1st gear especially when the car might be moving at 30km/h+.

While downloading to 1st gear over certain speed is not recommended on manual, is the modern PDK designed to withstand these demands?

The first sec could be a bit slow but once above 2300 rpm you should be transformed to an airplane.
The turbo kicks in at 2000 rpm


Try to do the same in sport but even in normal it should pick up speed
