I plan to replace the engine air filter in my 2017 Cayman S, but I have run into a snag.

There are two air filter part numbers for the 2.5 liter engine, 982-129-620-A and 982-129-620-B

Use the B-Type if the engine is "without cold protection". A-Type if the engine has "cold protection".

How do I know if my car has cold protection?

What is cold protection?

Thanks!

Good question. The filters look identical in the exploded view drawings. A tighter weave of the filter fabric in the "cold weather version"? That would restrict the flow, but perhaps be better still in cold environments. Can't tell where you are from by hovering over your user name, but if you aren't driving a lot in cold weather, I'd go for the less restricted flow (if that is the difference).

I checked and my 718 came from the factory with the 982-129-620-B air filter.

I don't have an answer on what exactly "cold protection" means. That's still a mystery to me....

When you pull your old air filter out, I would just make sure the old and new part numbers match. It should be the 982-129-620-B part number.

The Porsche part number is printed (in black) on the side of the air filter.

I have my factory air filter sitting at my house because I upgraded to the BMC air filter.

After reading @agent 86 's post, I got it out last night to verify the part number.

I would assume all USA models would come with the same air filter part number from the factory.

Thank you. I was leaning toward the "B" version. Since I was buying online (Pelican Parts), I was hoping not to have to order twice.

Big thanks to @jns211 for his help and guidance.

I replaced the engine air filter in my CS today. Definitely time consuming, but easier than I thought it would be. Easier than changing the oil. :O

After 34 months and 9,400 miles the original filter was fairly dirty, and I found a small pile of leaves and debris resting at the bottom of the airbox.

The OEM filter that came out of my car was the 982-129-620-B. I purchased the filter from my dealer Porsche Bethesda (can't say enough positive things about this dealership). Including tax, I paid $49 for the filter with 10% PCA member discount. :)

I followed the very accurate guide found here: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=990060

I changed my air filter today at nearly 6,000 miles:

27494

Not too bad, but maybe a bit dirtier than I expected. The Porsche Club GB document was invaluable, but one thing it failed to mention was to watch out for / keep track of the black plastic cones that help hold the first four panels you need to remove:

27495

Sometimes they come out with the panel, and other times they remain loosely floating in the mounting point. It's pretty easy to lose one and have to pull out parts of the truck carpeting to find where they got to. (Ahem.)
