I have Entry & Drive. I frequently get out of my car, lock the car, and then go open the frunk to get my briefcase. can I close the frunk and walk away? or do i have to walk back to the door and lock it again (or use the remote)? The manual isn't clear.

Entry and drive is an option that my car has and I hate it

The boot and frunk never want to open when I approach the car and wave my hand across the relevant body parts and 9 times out of 10 I have to fish the key out. I never seem to know when the car is locked or unlocked so always end up either locking it with the key or touching the door handle, and I am always worried about someone scanning my key whilst at home and driving off with the car. I therefore have to keep the key hidden away from the front door

Also, there is nowhere convenient to store my keys inside the car when driving as I hate bulky things in my trouser pockets

As you can see, it really bugs me,

I bought the car used and it is the only one of the comprehensive options on the car I would never spec again

With regard your specific query, just nip back to the drivers door and touch the handle to be sure, though I expect the car will stay locked if you are only using the frunk after locking the car

I have entry and drive and if I have the key in my pocket and walk past the rear of the car the rear hatch pops open. I close it and it pops open again because I'm standing there. It's nice to not have to dig the key out of my pocket to start the car though. Maybe the dealer can fix it?

Hi Mike. No need to relock the car. If you get out, lock the car, then pop either trunk, once you close the trunk, the car should automatically lock itself and set the alarm again. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 95% certain. And it doesn't matter if you have Entry & Drive or not. Even a non Entry & Drive car will do the same, as long as you lock the car, then pop the trunk after, it should re-lock itself once you close the trunk.

I think the sweet spot is a pretty limited area. Waving my hand as is suggested never works well for me, so for both the frunk and hatch, I just kind of waggle my hand centered and close to the car's body. I am, however, training myself not to do this gesture while directly facing the car just in case I get overseen publicly in a parking lot!

My '17 Boxster (no E&D) will only finish the locking if the boot is opened and THEN the doors are locked. Opening the boot with the doors already locked (eg.--returning to the car with shopping) leaves the doors unlocked when the boot is closed.

I bought one of the first 718 Boxster's in San Diego with entry and drive and absolutely love it. I was not of the opinion that just waving your hand would open either trunk. I have always rubbed certain area on the body near the lock.

I've alway done the same. At the front, inline & just below the Porsche badge on the main bodywork & at the back, just below the spoiler & above the number plate area. I just touch the bodywork very lightly with my fingers tips flat to the bodywork & the respective frunk or trunk pops open each & every time. (I think all you actually need to do is hold your hand really really close, but I like stroking my car in any case). ;-)

The only thing I dislike is having to remember to put the keys well away from the car when pressure washing. If you don't & the water hits either of those spots then the inside gets wet.

I actually use the ignition fob in the normal manner when starting/stopping the car though, the little turn fob on keyless entry cars can be easily removed (unclips). I removed it because it looks a little too much like an actual key & very occasionally in some locations I became a little concerned some brainless oaf might break in, assuming it to be just that. It was only really when we were away from home but I just decided not to bother putting it back.

I have often wondered whether the fake key can be removed but still retain the entry and drive functionality. I like the idea of using the key in the ignition as it keeps it safe and out of my pocket
This should assist you should you also wish to do so. It's a little bit of a fiddle but only takes a matter of seconds. It's the same process as for the emergency release of a normal key fob.

The first disadvantage I knew about, the second I'd never considered--but 'urk'!

I'm still glad my dealer discouraged that option. He said it was not OK for Porsche's sport range.:D

I have to agree! My wife and I placed a build on our 718, and I made the conscience choice to NOT have Entry & Drive. On our 335i M-sport, it's a must have feature. I wouldn't of bought the car otherwise. On a luxury car, I love the feature, on a proper sports car, I would like to avoid that feature, if possible. Actually, Chilli's idea of having Entry & Drive but pulling out the fake FOB and using a Keating to start the car sounds like a brilliant idea! That way you get the best of both worlds. You get a car that opens to your set preferences (for those of us that have 2 drivers on the same car, like myself), without having to pull the key out of your pocket, but still using a key to start the car. The fake FOB can be pulled out by turning the fake FOB on and off 3 times in a row, then pulling the fake FOB out.

Hi, just clarify your last sentence, is that turning on and off the ignition without actually starting the car 3 times and then pulling out the fake fob. I know there is a way to remove it with a bit of fiddling as described earlier in this chain

Thanks

Please clarify TEST DRyVER. That would be cool because using the tool in the fuse box cover seems slightly painful. I'm personally happy with Entry & Drive in my car because it only gets parked 90-something percent of the time, in my garage. However, my wife wants me to take her to a few far-flung cafes around the state and being able to use the fob as a key would be great in that case. Thanks for the suggestion Chili! In return, may I suggest a Faraday pouch for car washing. I carry a small one in my glove box and keep both my key fobs in a larger Faraday purse at home in my condo.

I have ordered my 718B with Entry & Drive, and that was mainly to get keyless start as I prefer to have the key in my pocket when I drive.
The keyless entry part however I could easily live without, it's a nice comfort feature but not really essential to me.
It also seems that keyless start is standard on the 992, with keyless entry being an option, so that could also be the case for the 718 when it gets an update.

I am also interested in the option of removing the fake key using the "turn it on and off three times" routine described by TEST DRyVer but was not able to remove it following that technique. Am I missing a step here - knock twice, face Zuffenhausen or;)? I know I can use the fiddly method described in the users manual but the easier method is certainly appealing.

That is correct! You can do this without even having the key on you or in the car. Just unlock your door, leave your key outside to keep the car from going into auxiliary mode several times, turn the fake FOB (sorry, I don't know the name of the stationary fob) on and off 3 times, then simply pull it out.
They designed it to be removable in case your key battery stops working. If the battery in your key is completely dead, your car won't start (if you have Entry & Drive). So this is designed to allow you to pull the fake fob out and apply your real key into the car to start the engine.

Well, this sounded like a good bit of reasoning, but I had to check it out! Took my key down to the garage, opened the door, put my key in my Faraday pouch, turned the fake fob and the MFD lit up with a message, turned it two more times and the message in the MFD changed to something about inserting my key in the ignition, and I heard a loud click and the fake fob pulled right out! Just like TEST DRyVer said! So I put my key in and it worked fine and then pulled my key out and put the fake fob back in and it doesn't anchor itself back in until you turn it to auxiliary once. So, our smartass cars are even trickier than I thought. Thanks for the tip, TEST DRyVer!
