Picking up my Cayman 2.0 in a couple of weeks. It’s just shy of 3 years old and as such the warranty is expiring and I’m in 2 minds to renew it or not.

Is anyone else in the same position? What have you done?

We have some great specialists down here and my nearest OPC is an hour away so personally I’d rather service it local and not have the hassle. I got the car at a good price however to allow me to budget for the warranty if necessary.

How do would you guys feel about running one without warranty? The warranty price is reasonable but the restrictions for servicing and silly things like tyre or anything non factory put me off... I'm not adverse to paying to fix a car but don't want to stomach a 8/10k bill, not that I'd expect one but my previous 911 once had a 12k rebuild!

Thanks for your help!

How many miles (km?) on the car, how many do you anticipate driving per year, and how long do you anticipate owning it? If like most three year old Porsches it has less than 20 or 25 thousand miles, and you'll only drive it 6 or 8 thousand miles per year at most, I'd pass on an extended warranty if it were mine. Just my opinion of course.

Surely you should get some kind of warranty with it even if the factory one end? Unless you buy private?

I never heard of critical failures type ims bearing in a 718 so unless you are really unlucky and be the first one you shouldnt have massive repair bills....but then, the posts above are very true too.

As I understand it, you will have something over a year left on the original warranty (4yr/50K.) If you're looking for peace of mind then maybe it's worth it, but I think the odds of breaking even much less coming out ahead on these things are small. The only thing I'd worry about is the possibility the car has an issue that hasn't been brought to your attention, but I think you're ok since you have a year to go on the original warranty. If it were the case that no warranty or just a couple of months remained, I might spring for one year extended warranty to cover me while I became familiar the cars true mechanical condition. Again, just how I'd approach it.

I'd argue that it depends on how long you intend to keep the car. My salesperson (ah, "Brand Ambassador" they call it) had asked me how long I intended to keep my Cayman when I first went to buy one. I told him until it or I break, meaning for a long time. (I asked why I'd want to replace it and he said you'd be surprised, some people trade their car in every year, that they just had one person trade in a 1 year old 911 with only 33 miles on it. Yeesh, but that's a different tale even if pertinent to this thread.) We did not talk about frills like extended warranty. Later I worked out those details with their finance guy and decided the extended warranty was a good idea. I've had enough of having to decide between banging on my own wrenches and paying someone else to do it. For this car I didn't want to have to worry about it.

So some time later I happened to see the Brand Ambassador again. His work with me was done but we chatted for a while. He happened to mention that he had seen the sales paperwork and noticed that I'd taken the extended warranty. I explained that I didn't want to have to worry about it. He said it was good idea because as things get older the bigger items like the PCM or other electronics which might break down were quite expensive. That's when I'd really be glad to have a warranty at all. It's a form of insurance. Of course none of us can see the future so we don't know whether the PCM or PDK control module or turbo will break at all, let alone just two days after the maunfacturer's warranty runs out. But they are more likely to break when older than when newer.

Mr Jaws is in the UK judging by the wee flag. In the UK the warranty on new cars is 3 years. So there is basically none left.

Its going to be used daily quite a bit so I'd take 1 year Porsche Approved warranty for peace of mind - looks like the car is eligible for it. Unless if I know who I buy it from.

Correct! UK based. Warranty expires in about a week, can't even pick the car up due to coronavirus. Thankfully Porsche UK are honouring any warranty due to this and as such I have registered my interest to extend and they will cover any problems until I can make it to the dealer. I think I will bit the bullet, 111 point check and 2 years warranty for £1400. Not only for the peace of mind but if anything does happen and I wish to sell it's a great selling point. Let's hope all goes smoothly! At least if anything flags up in the check it should be covered by the warranty!

GB 1400 for two years is great. If you take it in once and a mechanic as much as looks at it sideways and the 1400 are up in smoke.:eek:

Talk to other Porsche owners/Porsche club for info on good indie shops, take it there for a scheduled oil change, get a feel for the place, maybe try someone else. Oil changes are not part of the warranty in most countries.;)

I agree. I think 1400 pound sterling for two years in this case is well worth the cost.

We bought a CPO BMW 328i MY2011 (1 year old with a 6-year 100k mi. warranty). The car is still like new with reasonably low miles. At year 6 the warranty ran out and they offered us an extended warranty to year 9 for about $3k or thereabouts IIRR.

We bought it! And BMW paid, and paid, and paid...:cool:

This year we started going to an indie. The infamous valve cover seal and two front shocks cost us as much. BMW were wiser not to offer another extended warranty...:ROFLMAO::LOL:

German cars ( especially Porsches ) are very expensive to own over the long run. It's always been that way with Porsche. BMWs are as bad or worse. Today the engines are very well made, but the electronic crap is a nightmare in the long run. Computers for early nineties are even manufactured anymore. And Porsche owners will have the same problem. It's just a fact of life with modern cars. If you want trouble free driving for over 100,000 miles buy a Toyota or a Honda.
I know that no one on this forum would accept this, but if we went back to a 120hp 2 ltr 4 banger with a radio not connected to the car's main computer, and just had a clutch and a nice 5sp, we could probably drive our cars for 100s of thousands of miles with just oil and filter changes and the usual brakes and plugs.
I figure that when my Cayman is close to the warranty expired, I am dumping the car.

I wouldnt mind that : D
120hp is a bit too little, but then with the simpler everything else weight would go down as well so maybe.

hi guys, I have checked the websites but there is no specific info. is there anywhere to check what exactly the warranty extension covers?

my car warranty expiring 10/10/2020. I have asked the dealer for the extension of 2 years. the prices here in cyprus are as follows:

1. 130 euros for the 111 points check in order to grand the car if eligible for warranty extention.

2. one year extension 800 euros

3. if you want two years extension will be 1400 euros (discount of 200 euros).

This sounds close to the Australian version (which I purchased a couple of months ago—despite some misgivings).
There was a Porsche booklet that detailed coverage and something similar should be available to you before purchase. The cost for the check was waived as I renewed before my existing warranty lapsed.

Thank you! I will check with them.
