Sorry for the rant, but I need to get this off my chest....

Has anyone else had any experience/Issues with the Fabspeed Supercup Turboback Exhaust?

I wanted some extra HP, Torque, Turbo Sound, and Exhaust notes from my beloved 718 w/o sport exhaust, and I have read that replacing the catalytic converter provides more of a HP gain that a cat back system. I had the Fabspeed X-Pipes with carbon tips installed already, so this was really just for sound and performance. As such, I spent weeks looking at systems and ultimately narrowed it down to two options:

1 - Fabspeed Supercup Turboback with the sport cat ($2500)
2 - Soul Performance Downpipe with the sport cat ($2000)

I have read reviews on this forum from those that are unimpressed with Fabspeed customer service and delivery speed; whereas, most people on here are impressed with Soul and Mike seems to be pretty active on the site. However, the ability to get a full turbo back system for only $500 more was too tempting to pass up and I already had the carbon tips. As such, I called Fabspeed and talked to a service advisor (I won't name him) and was actually pleasantly surprised. I asked for a discount as I already had the carbon tips and would not need those; however the service advisor insisted that they would not fit the new system. Instead, he offered me a 15% "loyalty" discount on the order and promised that the system would ship within 2 weeks. This brought the full system down to roughly the same price as the Soul downpipe, and I was impressed enough that I also ordered a carbon license plate frame which me would have the same discount.

After a few days I still hadn't received a confirmation email, so I had to follow up with my service advisor. He responded to my email within hours with a confirmation; however, it showed that I was paying full price for the license plate frame. I quickly replied back to point out the error and never heard back - he completely ghosted me on the issue and the overcharge remained.

The good news is that the system did deliver on Friday and appeared to be high quality; however, it did not come with instructions. I planned to do the install myself, so I reached back out to my trusted service advisor who sent through the wrong instructions for their cat solution (ignoring the overcharge amount a second time). In unpacking the system I also noticed that the carbon tips were the exact same ones that I already had and they would have fit fine.....

Saturday morning I woke up early to install the system. I was frustrated that I never received the discount on the license plate frame, they sent me the wrong instructions, and my old tips would have fit, but i was excited to hear and feel the new system. I was able to complete the entire install by lunchtime with a floor jack and 2 jackstands. The entire process is not really that hard if you are mechanically inclined and I was impressed with the quality of the Fabspeed materials.

The first cold start was very impressive - the Fabspeed exhaust sounded amazing, definitely more turbo sound and "growl". It literally sounded like a supercar. However, as soon as I pulled out of my driveway and hit 1800 RPMs, the system started droning like crazy - it had the same pressure effect as when you drive down the highway with only one window down. I took it for a 15 minute test drive and realized that it drones between about 1800 - 3000, and then again above 4000. 15 minutes was all I could take. By the time i got back home my ears were ringing and I felt like I had ridden too may rollercoasters as my equilibrium was all off.

After cleaning up the garage from the install, I tried again a few hours later. I made it 10 minutes before feeling nauseous from the drone. IT IS LITERALLY INDESCRIBABLE HOW MUCH THIS SYSTEM DRONES!

Later that night my wife and I loaded up in the Porsche for our typical Saturday night date night and I intentionally didn't warn her about my experience to see if she would experience it as well. I wasn't even out of the neighborhood before she said she felt like she was on a rollercoaster and we sat in silence on the 15 minute drive to the restaurant as talking was out of the question with the drone and the noise. It was so bad that we took longer at the restaurant than normal to give our ears a break before putting them through another 15 minutes of ****. We literally drove home in silence and switched out for one of our other cars for the rest of the night as we couldn't take it anymore.

So now I don't exactly know what to do. My beloved Porsche is in the garage, un-driveable with the drone-maker installed, and I have the factory exhaust laying next to it. It looks like the Superdrone system can be sent back based on Fabspeed's "sound solution guarantee". If I could snap my fingers and have the factory exhaust re-installed I probably would; however, since I need to spend a few hours ripping the sound abomination off my car which is half the effort of installing a new system, I'd like to figure out something else to put on it.

I will not order another system from Fabspeed with their customer service issues. Maybe just order the Soul downpipe and reinstall the factory cat back exhaust to it? Thoughts?

@mike at Soul - would be interested in hearing your thoughts? Could be an interesting way to get a comparison as I'd be going directly from the Supercup to your system if we can work something out?

Going to wipe the blood from my ears now......

Maybe a stupid question, but is the Soundaktor still active? The resonator is design to augment the stock exhaust. If you haven't disconnected it, it's a free test to try.

Great question, I pulled the fuse on day 2 of ownership so the drone is all from the exhaust. I can’t imagine what it would sound like if I had the Soundakator augmenting it...

In that case, you could try putting the fuse back in. What could possibly go wrong :p

OP do you think mounting points may be influencing what you're hearing? I had the cat back system installed. It's certainly louder in sport and sport+, but not so much in normal mode. It is curious that the cat back system retains both pipes whereas the system you installed pushes all of the exhaust thru a single pipe. I'm actually wondering how that works.

@GTS18BGTS - Not sure what exactly is causing it. Fabspeed wrote back and asked me to check and see if there were any leaks......there weren't. Best I can figure, it's likely caused by only having one pipe instead of two which means that there is nothing in the system to prevent the drone or change the sound tone. Normal mode and Sport mode sound the same with the drone, but the sport mode does have the "burbles" that I enjoy.

Update on the issue and hopeful solution:

Based on the drone, I have decided to send the Supercup system back to Fabspeed. I contacted Mike @ Soul Performance on Monday and he has been very helpful in trying to come up with a solution. I'm really excited to receive the Street Package on Friday which will include a new downpipe with sport cat and the valved exhaust system. This should give me the power boost from the cat, give it more of a growl, and the valved exhaust will give me the functionality to open and close the system to make it quieter or louder depending on the situation, similar to the functionality of the PSE. I plan to install over the weekend (the exhaust at least, potentially not the control module), and I can report back the results afterwards. It should be an interesting comparison going directly from the Supercup to the full Soul system.

Mike also sent the pic of my cat being fabricated - it looks like really good quality stuff.

I have the turbo back system with no cat, and the tune from fabspeed on my boxster S and absolutely love it. Sounds unbelievable, and runs like a raped ape. When there is some slight drone I change the gear or I go light on the gas in regular mode. There is some drone, but its not whats described above. Its very minor and only in low rpms. Not a deal breaker at all when you consider the 40lb weight loss, the performance gain, and the super car sound. I do have a convertible though, top is never up. When I do have it up, traps the sound a lil more specially with windows up. Maybe you should swap the cayman for a boxster, keep the exhaust, lol.

Ha - I think I'll be keeping the Cayman and not swapping it out. Thanks for the input above, I agree that it is more noticeable with lower RPMs and then there is a break and then it comes back as you to into the higher RPMs.

Thank you again for working with us to try a new solution, Jason! I assure you that you'll experience no drone with our setup. It may not offer as exhilarating of a roar at full bore but it's a very livable system and a great improvement over OEM - more of that turbo noise you love.

Here's another shot of your downpipe on the fabrication table after it was completed but before final finishing and shipping prep:

We're also working on a more aggressive, non-valved rear exhaust if you ever want to upgrade to more loud, you'd break even reselling the valved system and switching to the aggressive rear exhaust.

We're all looking forward to your feedback - and if anyone ever has any questions don't hesitate to reach out to discuss your unique needs, that's what we're here for!

Did you install the new exhaust yet? I heard the rear trunk area of the Cayman can produce drone

Jason has been away in Ireland and hasn't had a chance to leave a full review, but here is his response to me via email on 9/23:

"Mike - not going to lie, I think I'm in love with the system. I finished the install on Saturday morning and have been enjoying it ever since. It's not super noticeable in normal mode, but as soon as you put the car in sport mode the difference is much greater. It definitely accentuates the differences between the two modes."

Apologies for the tardy reply - just got back from an amazing trip to Ireland.

First, I'll give a quick update on Fabspeed. They handled the return well and gave me back 100% of what I paid for the Supercup Exhaust. Overall I was impressed that they held true to their sound guarantee.

As for the Soul Exhaust system - I absolutely love it. There is now a huge difference between normal and sport modes, with sport mode sounding much more aggressive, more burbles and crackles, and really nice loud pops when coming off the throttle above 4K RPM. The sound is exactly what I was looking for - more aggressive but not juvenile. Additionally, I definitely feel a performance gain with the the sport cat, especially at higher RPMs. Overall I am very impressed with the quality and performance of the Soul system, and Mike was awesome to work with. I have not as of yet installed the controller to be able to close the valves, as I love the sound with them open so much. I will when the time allows, but there is no real compelling reason to do so as if i want it quieter in the cabin I just switch from sport to normal mode.

Overall couldn't be happier with the entire situation and now I love my 718 even more than before because it's faster and sounds amazing.

Seriously considering the single pipe turbo back from fabspeed for my Cayman and want to see if anyone else has this (catted version) on their cayman and hear considerable amount of drone. I've had many loud cars before so it may be subjective.
