Sorry for the rant, but I need to get this off my chest....
Has anyone else had any experience/Issues with the Fabspeed Supercup Turboback Exhaust?
I wanted some extra HP, Torque, Turbo Sound, and Exhaust notes from my beloved 718 w/o sport exhaust, and I have read that replacing the catalytic converter provides more of a HP gain that a cat back system. I had the Fabspeed X-Pipes with carbon tips installed already, so this was really just for sound and performance. As such, I spent weeks looking at systems and ultimately narrowed it down to two options:
1 - Fabspeed Supercup Turboback with the sport cat ($2500)
2 - Soul Performance Downpipe with the sport cat ($2000)
I have read reviews on this forum from those that are unimpressed with Fabspeed customer service and delivery speed; whereas, most people on here are impressed with Soul and Mike seems to be pretty active on the site. However, the ability to get a full turbo back system for only $500 more was too tempting to pass up and I already had the carbon tips. As such, I called Fabspeed and talked to a service advisor (I won't name him) and was actually pleasantly surprised. I asked for a discount as I already had the carbon tips and would not need those; however the service advisor insisted that they would not fit the new system. Instead, he offered me a 15% "loyalty" discount on the order and promised that the system would ship within 2 weeks. This brought the full system down to roughly the same price as the Soul downpipe, and I was impressed enough that I also ordered a carbon license plate frame which me would have the same discount.
After a few days I still hadn't received a confirmation email, so I had to follow up with my service advisor. He responded to my email within hours with a confirmation; however, it showed that I was paying full price for the license plate frame. I quickly replied back to point out the error and never heard back - he completely ghosted me on the issue and the overcharge remained.
The good news is that the system did deliver on Friday and appeared to be high quality; however, it did not come with instructions. I planned to do the install myself, so I reached back out to my trusted service advisor who sent through the wrong instructions for their cat solution (ignoring the overcharge amount a second time). In unpacking the system I also noticed that the carbon tips were the exact same ones that I already had and they would have fit fine.....
Saturday morning I woke up early to install the system. I was frustrated that I never received the discount on the license plate frame, they sent me the wrong instructions, and my old tips would have fit, but i was excited to hear and feel the new system. I was able to complete the entire install by lunchtime with a floor jack and 2 jackstands. The entire process is not really that hard if you are mechanically inclined and I was impressed with the quality of the Fabspeed materials.
The first cold start was very impressive - the Fabspeed exhaust sounded amazing, definitely more turbo sound and "growl". It literally sounded like a supercar. However, as soon as I pulled out of my driveway and hit 1800 RPMs, the system started droning like crazy - it had the same pressure effect as when you drive down the highway with only one window down. I took it for a 15 minute test drive and realized that it drones between about 1800 - 3000, and then again above 4000. 15 minutes was all I could take. By the time i got back home my ears were ringing and I felt like I had ridden too may rollercoasters as my equilibrium was all off.
After cleaning up the garage from the install, I tried again a few hours later. I made it 10 minutes before feeling nauseous from the drone. IT IS LITERALLY INDESCRIBABLE HOW MUCH THIS SYSTEM DRONES!
Later that night my wife and I loaded up in the Porsche for our typical Saturday night date night and I intentionally didn't warn her about my experience to see if she would experience it as well. I wasn't even out of the neighborhood before she said she felt like she was on a rollercoaster and we sat in silence on the 15 minute drive to the restaurant as talking was out of the question with the drone and the noise. It was so bad that we took longer at the restaurant than normal to give our ears a break before putting them through another 15 minutes of ****. We literally drove home in silence and switched out for one of our other cars for the rest of the night as we couldn't take it anymore.
So now I don't exactly know what to do. My beloved Porsche is in the garage, un-driveable with the drone-maker installed, and I have the factory exhaust laying next to it. It looks like the Superdrone system can be sent back based on Fabspeed's "sound solution guarantee". If I could snap my fingers and have the factory exhaust re-installed I probably would; however, since I need to spend a few hours ripping the sound abomination off my car which is half the effort of installing a new system, I'd like to figure out something else to put on it.
I will not order another system from Fabspeed with their customer service issues. Maybe just order the Soul downpipe and reinstall the factory cat back exhaust to it? Thoughts?
@mike at Soul - would be interested in hearing your thoughts? Could be an interesting way to get a comparison as I'd be going directly from the Supercup to your system if we can work something out?
Going to wipe the blood from my ears now......
