First impressions 718 Cayman

I thought I'd share my impressions with the car and give feedback on the options I did chose for the benefit of others who may be ordering their 718.

Disclaimer: This is strictly my personal opinion and YMMV of course.

It has been 4 weeks and 1000 miles since I took delivery of my 718 Cayman. I'm still trying to respect break in so I have not pushed the limits often yet.

First of all I chose the 2.0 vs the 2.5 engine. While the 2.5 engine is certainly great the 2.0 is plenty responsive and fast enough for my needs.
One reason for choosing the 718 in the first place was to get a car that's fun and engaging to drive without having to do double the posted speed limit just to rev out 2nd gear.
The 2.0 engine fits this bill perfectly imho. Both engines 2.5 and 2.0 sound absolutely sublime for 4 cylinder engines.
The power, torque and soul Porsche squeezes out of them is simply amazing.
Love the sound the turbo makes. It's like a breathing dragon sitting behind you.
If you expect or want the specific sound of a 6,8,10 or 12 cylinder, well then go and buy a different car...

I chose the GT Silver and like it a lot. If I'd order one again today I would also consider Chalk which was not available outside of PTS at the time.

The full leather interior elevates the cabin to the next level. I had a 718 Boxster loaner with the standard interior and found it lacking premium feel.

I also chose the LED headlights because not only do they look amazing they also light up the road at night nicely. The auto high beams work great.

The PDK is fantastic. It almost always guesses the gear right for you and shifts are instant. The manual would be fun for sure but is not for me at this time.

Sport exhaust system, while pricey is nice and deepens the stock exhaust sound quite a bit when active. I like it but I'm sure there are comparable aftermarket solutions available.

LCA works great. Would order it again.

The GT sport steering wheel is hands down the BEST steering wheel I've ever had in any car - ever. A definite must have for me.

Make sure to test the available seats in person. I found the 14 way to be the best fit and most comfortable for me.

I did order some bling:
- Interior Package Painted. Very nice to look at the interior trim and have it match the mirrors outside.
- Porsche Crest on Headrest. Well because Porsche. Not a must though.
- Door-Sill in Stainless Steel. Very nice addition imho. The standard sills are too short.
- Light Design Package. Adds a couple of LEDs to the interior and makes it look 2017. Very nice.

The Bose sounds system is ok. I did not compare to the standard and the Burmester up-charge was not worth it to me. Most of the time I listen to the glorious engine anyway.

Porsche Connect works great. In the US the cost of onboard nav and connect plus is dumb. Got the Connect option and an iPhone just for the car - for less.

Hope my thoughts are helpful to someone. Now back to driving.

Thanks for the post. Please load some photos. I'm 2 months out from my Cayman GT Silver 2.0T being delivered and I've exhausted every GT Silver Cayman photos on the web. I need some fresh photos. What wheels did you get?
Certainly helpful to me. I learned a few things from your post, and appreciated a bit of validation on several options that are on my preference list. The full leather interior, and Porsche's bespoke build philosophy are one of the reasons I've recently become a fan of the brand.
Thanks for sharing your impressions.

Cheap track set up

I have mine for a week, it is my 5th Porsche, + an 2007 Audi RS4 with 4,2L V8. Plans are to track the car 2-3 times a year, like I did with previous cars.

SET UP: car is "S" version, indian red, black 20 inch wheels, black trim everywhere ( exhaust tips, decals), lowered suspension 20mm, adjustable dampers, PDK-sport plus, sport seats with manual adjustments, sport exhaust, smaller steering wheel, extinguisher. Have no headlight washer as it proved to be useless on previous cars, std sound system which is sufficient, black std interior. All in all, have approx 16000$ CAD worth of extras which is perfect for daily and couple of times a year of track days.

I like the "individual mode" which I used in town with sport exhaust "on", auto stop-start "off", spoiler out. Am currently breaking in this car as I have driven 800km last week-end, and plan to do the same this week-end. Idea is to have at least 3000km before first track use.

Compared to the 911 "997" type I had just before, the Cayman S is in another league, really. Stiffer, more confortable in normal mode, faster by far, low torque available, sound is great.

@capeliI'll see if I can take some fresh photos this weekend. :nerd:

@FiloupYour Cayman looks great! I agree with you on the headlight washers. They are useless and actually kind of an eyesore. Wish there would have been a way to order PDLS+ (LEDs) without them.

Any plans on upgrading the tires when you take it out to the track or just have a different set of track wheels?
I plan to use the car as is, with the Pirellis. No plan for now to buy another set of wheels, since I track the car only 1-2 times a year. If I do more than that, friends of mine use NITTOs tire, which are noisy, but sticky, cheap to buy, and you can use them on tne road and track, they last longer than Hoozier slicks. I might go for this options. I also see a lot of guys using a small hitch and small trailer behind the car, to bring their tires, jack, and toolbox. It is a cheap set up, I like it because you are very independant for the whole week end of track time.
