Hello all. I live in London, UK. I was wanting to change the car to a Porsche and was looking at the Boxster.

A local dealer has offered me a pre-reg car for something close to the base price but essentially all the options for free (metallic paint, bigger wheels, sports seats, chrono, parking sensors, bi xenon lights, seat heating, multifunction wheel etc ). If I value all the options works out as approximately a 20-25% saving against new. Alternatively, it’s basically the car at list but with the options.

I was debating whether this is worth it. I was thinking about waiting for the potential face lift but also seems like a good deal? Any thoughts?

thank you

What year is the car. The closer to current the better the deal. How many miles does it have. Is it being sold as new or as used and if so is it CPO'd and how much time is added to the warranty as per British CPO.

The closer to new and the closer to 2020, the better the deal. A new 2020 would be a total steal. A used 2017-2018 with no CPO would not be a good deal at all.

Also how do you feel about the options - are they options you would want. If they are not options you want then it does not really help. Looking at the options they are definitely options I would want but that is me, perhaps your options list is different. Take for example NAV. I live by apple play and Waze and so paying even a dollar or a quid as you put it for NAV would be a wasted quid

Finally most of our answers are going to be based on the US market and the European (which for the moment I believe still includes you ?) might be a little different.

Thank you. The car is essentially brand new with 5 miles on the clock.
If the car is sitting on a dealer's lot right now I assume it's either a 2018 or 2019. If so, it sounds to me like a very good deal, or a great deal, depending on which year if, as craig66 points out, you value all the options in line with their prices.

I should add, if by "pre-reg" you mean the car was put in-service and the warranty clock is running, the number of months used up should be taken into consideration. In this case you might ask to have the car CPO'd, agreeing to pay the dealer's cost (an hour's labor perhaps on an otherwise new car?) plus a little for goodwill.

Sounds like an amazing deal. I've just purchased an ex OPC 2019 (69 plate registered in September) with 2 year additional warranty, 1 FOC service, and a number of options that I'd want (so list is circa £71k new). Only difference is it has 8.5k miles on it (saves me running the engine in). Equivalent discount is circa 15%.

Which version are you looking at?, base, S, GTS?

They are great cars, have you spent much time in one before? Whatever way you jump - enjoy the chase. Do you have a link to the for sale ad?

Thank you. It’s the base model I was going for and I did test drive one this weekend. I haven’t had a Porsche before so maybe I was a bit less wound up by the 4 vs. 6 cylinders.

I did enjoy it very much. Which car did you go for?

It’s not on the web but was one of the central London dealers.

Same here (my first Porsche)...

I'd definitely recommend you at least try the S before committing - first Cayman I drove was a base model and was blown away by the handling. Also have no negatives on the exhaust front, tend to drive around Essex with my windows closed for the most part.

I've not driven a GTS (the variant I've opted for) but hired an S over Xmas for a week, and the difference in performance between the S and base in real world scenarios meant an S was the minimum I wanted. The one I've gone for had been for sale for a couple of months and the deal we reached satisfied me.

Thank you all for the input. That’s a very smart car, Fnumber. It’s a good point - I should drive the S too although the reality is I don’t drive that much at all hence my view that a base model could be sufficient. I drive a JCW at the moment - similar in some ways but very different!
