I live in Oakland, CA and was curious... Where do you Bay Area folks like to exercise your 718s? Right now the best I can find is a stretch of Keller Ave just north of 580 up to Skyline Blvd, and then Skyline to Redwood Road. Would love to hear about smooth, fun, curvy roads where I could drive the 718 as she was meant to be driven...

Hwy. 35, aka Skyline Drive., runs along the spine of the Santa Cruz Mountains as they descend into the Peninsula between the Pacific and the Bay. The most northern stretch -- from above San Bruno to Lake Merced in S.F. -- is straight suburban driving. It's the more elevated and Alpine segment, from Hwy. 92 south all the way to Hwy. 9, that attracts sports cars, motorcycles and bicycles (and CHP presence) on week-ends. Explore it on a week-day (beware of heavy fog esp. in morning) and discover a mostly-empty driving road that rivals the best European stretches seen on YouTube. It's all 2-lane blacktop, smooth and well-maintained.

From Alice's Restaurant at Hwy. 35 and Hwy. 84 (Woodside-LaHonda Rd.) heading north it's twisty 2nd and 3rd gear curves connected with some short straights, all in the shadows of tall trees on both sides of the road. At the northern end near Hwy. 92 it emerges into open vistas of the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Bay and Peninsula -- opening into Silicon Valley -- to the east.

But the really prime, high-speed driving is from Alice's south, all the way to Hwy. 9 far above Saratoga. Here it's mostly third and fourth gear, open vistas alternating with shorter wooded stretches, gentle rolling hills and nary a structure to be seen (just a few mailboxes and pull-offs/parking for vistas and Open Space preserves). Indeed there is but a single crossroad (Page Mill Rd.) on this miles-long stretch.

Expect little traffic on week-days mid-day but be alert always for hardcore cyclists doing their 100-mile training rides. Expect to see some hardcore motor vehicles too, both 2 and 4-wheel variety. As a state highway, this is CHP jurisdiction, and while you might see one (in 4X4 SUV -- this is the mountains) traveling north or south, I've never known them to set-up radar blinds.

As a side trip take Hwy. 84 west on the long descent out to the coast...it's a great road in its own right, and connects with fabled Pacific Coast Hwy. (#1) where magnificent views and equally great driving accompany the jaunt south to Pescadero, then back north to Half Moon Bay and Hwy. 92, for a return to the Peninsula; or continue north on 1 up through Pacifica and the very cool Devil's Slide tunnels.

Be safe, enjoy!

The following applies to cars, despite the target audience being motorcycle riders.

Google: Top 100 motorcycle roads

Open the link for motorcycleroads.com > best

There are several listed that are either in NoCal, or close enough to reach in a day trip. I did a lot of the CA roads when I lived there.

Bay Area Drive

Another great drive is to drive out to Mt Hamilton from San Jose. Check out the observatory and great views. Leaving The observatory, follow the roads and signs to Livermore for lunch and a little wine tasting. The hills are green and stunning this time of year.

Yes, please. :) I'm a regular cyclist on Hwy 9. I'm not that hardcore, but I'm big which means heading down into Saratoga I can easily exceed the speed limit, therefore I almost always take the lane. If you think a cyclist is holding you up on that downhill then check your speedo - you might be going faster than you think.

(It's always the same thing. I get home, go get in the shower, the SO checks Strava and starts yelling "WHAT WERE YOU DOING GOING THAT FAST?!?!?". Every. Time.)

Napa to Lake Baryessa / Glory Hole. Road was drawn with 718's in mind.
+1 on this.

Also, if traveling to LA:

Take 101S, then take Highway 58 over to 5 (if you don’t want to continue on 101). Epic twisties, and the straightaway that runs past the solar farm may encourage explorations of the speed limiter. I would never do that.

Any roads to avoid due to aggressive speed enforcement?

I know highway patrol likes to hang out on 280 near 92.

Also on 280 south of San Fransciso there is a section on the southbound side where the road slopes downward sharply and they catch people who don't brake as they go down the hill.

I'm a transplant from North Carolina. I sure do miss Deal's Gap and the Tail of the Dragon.

I'm now in Menlo Park and really enjoy the drive up to Alices's. Several weeks ago I took a trip from San Jose up to Lick Observatory. It was a heck of a lot of fun. When the weather clears I plan to drive Mines Road from Lick Observatory up to Livermore.

2) Alice’s Restaurant to Page Mill RD.
3) Page Mill RD to Palo Alto downtown.

The first time I learned what (severe) understeer was was on Page Mill Rd as a 17 year old in my old Corvette, coming from Altamont in LAH heading towards 280. I thought I was going to die, even though I really only drifted out just a little bit.
