Hello there.

Not long ago my Base Cayman went off with my local Porsche Center for some work and they passed me a nice Boxter GTS for the day.

One thing I noticed and still haunt me to this day is the stop/start feature on this one.

Unlike my base, when coming to a stop, it would take several minutes of idleness for the stop/start stopping the engine. Which I found really really good. No more stopping every single times the car stop for half a second before every roundabout. It would stop ONLY when there is a long traffic jam. Which is, I think, how it should be.

Now I was wondering if this is on every GTS or just a happy bug of that courtesy car. Or maybe there is a tu ing option also available in my Base I completly missed?

Note I was not in any special mode when I observed this behaviour on the GTS, just normal mode, no sport/sport+ .

I don't know about specific GTS behavior but the description of Auto Stop/Start in the manual may explain your experience. There are a bunch of things which keep it from turning the engine off. As I recall, specifically mentioned are engine warm-up state, how far (or how fast?) you had driven since the last shut-off, A/C load, and electrical load or battery state. So under different conditions it may behave differently, especially from car to car. So your experience may not have been because you were in a GTS.

I had to use a rental car recently, Buick, I think. (I don't know how the Porsche version functions, comparatively.) The auto start/stop was so dumb. I sat at Costco waiting for gas. Sit still for 2 minutes (engine stayed on). Drive forward, wait 4 minutes (engine stays on). Then when I got into traffic it would stop and 5 seconds later I had to move forward. Then move forward again, engine stops, I shift into Park, turns ON even though I'm telling the engine that I'm going to be sitting here for a while! This stupid "feature" does not even remotely work effectively. Thanks, government!

What years is your car and what years was the loaner from?
Can be a new thing, my 2018 BGTS behaves as your car, not as your loaner.

if i'm slowly coming to a stop, mine will turn off at 3 mph before i even come to a complete stop.

Mine too, sometimes this is a bit annoying.. because if you don't stop but instead continue to drive, the engine has to be started again..

It sounds like you made a mistake, and had to switch on the engine manually :(

Yes, my base do that too. And it happened a few times at a busy cross road / roundabout. Exactly where you don't want the engine to stop. At first I was happy enough with the stop/start but now I just turn it off first thing in the car. It's a shame because I do think its a good feature, just not very well implemented. That's why I was pleasantly surprised with that loan boxter GTS, it just worked without being in the way.
Maybe jimmuller is on to something that could explain that behavior. I should be getting that exact same Boxter for about a week at the end of the month, I'll have more time to test.

It should just be a button you push to turn it off, then lifting off the brake or pushing in the clutch turns it on.

The best solution is to eliminate the start/stop. For $199 you can buy a defeat module that you install under the shift tunnel cover. The module will remember your setting so if you have start/stop off then the next time you start the car the start/stop remains off. Mine is a manual transmission car so major improvement without stat/stop.

This doesn't sound right at all, these must be cars with PDK? Unless it is like a coasting function, fuel and ignition cut when no power is required, if so they should automatically restart if you were to squeeze the throttle down just bit before the car has come to a complete stop.

Mine is a CGTS with pdk

It automatically cuts the engine, probably because of fuel efficiency... But I think it does it too early..
PDK, that's what I thought, that scenario wouldn't work with a MT car, they can do it differently because the computer is controlling the transmission, emissions and fuel economy are driving this type of behaviour, not much you can do other then to opt out if the manufacturer provides a defeat button to do so.

Thing is, some people swear by it, others swear at it... opinions vary. ?

In my MT 981 GTS it was easy to bypass, back then the defeat button would stay in the last position, additionally Start/Stop only occurred if I shifted the MT in neutral and then released the clutch, I believe that my next MT Porsche will behave the same.

I wouldn't know, I may have forgotten to press the Sport button 3 or 4 times in the 16 months I own the car. I have experimented with Normal a few more times, I have never encountered the behavior of it shutting the engine off while still moving. I don't drive the PDK in Normal...

On a 2017 manual transmission car it would shut off at low speed without car stopped. Would make very expensive sounds as it rolled. Maybe it was trying to restart? Nor well engineered.

Was this on your car, are you saying that with the clutch engaged it simply turned off the engine? Did you take it in to the dealer and ask if this was right, doesn't seem like it should be!

can you link to the module?

On a MT car it doesn't make sense to turn off the engine with the clutch engaged!

I would make very expensive noises too if someone shove a stick up my @$$ to get me going while stopped...:rolleyes: Your engine dies, you automatically press the clutch pedal, if you haven't done it already in preparation for stopping...
