Auto vs manuel

Curious who opted for which transmission and what influenced you to go that way.. Anyone have regrets with their choice? thanks
Mine is just a CS, but when I test drove a PDK , I just couldn't buy a manual. At 66yo, I have driven manuals for a long time. With the PDK and the ability to downshift or upshift in the middle of corners without upsetting the car, I was hooked. I get the nostalgic reasoning of manuals, but that's all it is. Buy what you want , but a manual transmission is a downgrade in performance. It's 2018.

Recently ordered a Manual GTS in Guards Red. Call me old school, but I love the feeling of heel/toeing and rev-matching on a downshift. My last couple of daily drives have been/are Dual Clutch PDK-like gearboxes and while great are not as involving. This car wont be my daily driver. Outright pace wasnt a main consideration for me as well.

Its personal preference ultimately - even though I did drive a PDK as well - both are cracking transmissions. Either way you cant lose !

Cheers.

Manual all the way. I had the same predicament as you and many others, but since getting my Agate Grey Manual CGTS I've never looked back.

Written lots on this in previous posts in the GTS section. Have a look, hopefully helpful.

I am happy with my decision to get a manual, though I admit that I do second guess myself. I don’t subscribe to the belief that a sports car needs to be manual. I understand that a modern sports car such as the 718 is well complimented by a modern transmission such as the PDK. If someday I decide to trade my 718 for another Porsche, I would definitely consider a PDK. For now I love the connection I feel with the car via manual.

I'll admit to having never driven a PDK equipped car. When I was looking at a manual 718 Cayman S, my SA asked if I wanted to drive one with the PDK and I declined. A couple days later I ordered my CGTS with the 6mt without hesitation.

In part, my choice was driven by my $80k budget. If I had chosen the PDK, I wouldn't have been able to even order the few modest options I did choose.

I have to say one of the thoughts I had today was this car has the nicest slickest 6 speed I have ever owned.
I drove 210 miles up though DC with it in crawling traffic and still am happy with what I have bought.

I ordered my CGTS with a PDK. A few reasons for my choice. I know that there is no way that I could shift manually as fast as the PDK. An instructor took me me for a ride in a PDK GTS and the way it downshifted and rev matched going into corners showed me that the car is far better than I will ever be. We picked up our car at Porsche Atlanta PEC and drove it home over 640 miles and got over 31.4 mpg. I’m very happy with my decision.

I ordered my car with a PDK after test driving a 718 with it, even though I'd planned a MT. I've been a manual driver for a long time but loved the pdk for its rapid shifting and ease of using the paddles - much better than I imagined.

My BS is manual. I drove both MT and PDK and briefly considered PDK. But, I went with MT and am ever so happy I did. It's a sweet shifter, and I love operating it. I autocross as well, and that's one place PDK would be handy. However, I spend a very small percentage of time doing AX relatively (daily driver) and am in no danger of getting close enough to win anyway... so would not be worth it to diminish my fun the rest of the time.

The computer-assisted fun of the PDK is my choice. :) I drove a BMW M3 5-speed for 17 years so I'm fine with the manual. But to be honest I never developed much skill at heel-toe coordination. Then I've had a Smart ForTwo for 10 years, my in-town car, and this has the same kind of technology as the PDK in a more basic form. So I'm used to that, and revel in the far better implementation in the Cayman. Also, my wife has trouble with her left knee so never drove the M3, and this was a major reason to trade it in on the Porsche... It is good that she can and has driven the Porsche, though she has her own wheels as well!

I got my 718 GTS with a PDK because I bought the car primarily as a track toy and I needed a little variety. It still irritates me a bit that it isn’t an MT but I still have three cars that are manual including my winter DD and summer weekend car.

If I can get used to a 4 cylinder engine, I guess I can also get used to a PDK.

Next stop: no cylinders, no transmission.

...hi everyone. For those familiar with Motoman and his car reviews, he just released a new "living with" video, highlighting the 718 Cayman GTS...you may (or may not) like his verdict on transmission choice (hint: I sure did!)...?
