Yes, I saw the car cover SF thread....

I live in Colorado which is ground zero for hail. I have been researching a hail blankets online. Anyone have any experience with using one? Seems all the ones I see are poor quality. I want this in case I am at work and golfball size hail is on its way. My desk is about 10 feet from my car, so I can store the hail blanket in my office---it doesn't need to fit in car. Yes, I have seen all the Facebooks picts of people using swimming pool noodles, etc.

Thoughts? Advice?

I was returning to the Chicago area after working for Mission Viejo land developers and living for two years in Aurora back in 1973. On the interstate east of Denver I got hit with a hailstorm from ****. I was driving a minty 1967 Ford LTD. I pulled over when it started and it was the most ungodly experience. The noise of the golf ball size hail was maddening. I put a pillow over my head and laid down on the front seat. I remember thinking after about 20 minutes of it that if I had a gun I might have blown my brains out. After it stopped you couldn’t drive through it, the hail was almost a foot deep. The sun came out and it melted within an hour. My poor LTD didn’t suffer any broken glass, but the sheet metal looked like a pack of trunk monkeys went crazy on it with ball peen hammers.

I don't know how effective the hail blankets are but from my experience living in Colorado I probably would invest in one and also speak to coworkers and friends maybe they can discuss the effectiveness of these protective 'blankets".
My experience with hail while living in Colorado was a tad overwhelming. At the time I was living in an apartment and having moved from NY when a weather report was broadcast about impending hail all of the sudden many people came running out of their apartments and placed their cars under car port covers. I was thinking, based upon my experience with hail in NY which is generally pea sized and not much to worry about, what's the big deal why are people getting a little crazy. Well then the hail storm started and I am looking at my 210 Datsun out my apartment window and it was decimated with golf ball and baseball size hail. The entire car top and sides had massive pock marks and then the hail took out both my thick rear hatch back glass and side quarter panel. It was stunning to watch and to add insult to injury while I am watching my car be destroyed a baseball size hail smashes the large window I am peering out. Needless to say after that I have had a healthy respect for Colorado HAIL.

WOW!
In The UK/Europe we don't see hail like that. I would be gutted if the story above happened to my 718. I don't even know where you stand with Insurance?!

I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY and left around the age of 27 and never saw hail that massive before other than tiny pea sized hail but then the rest of the story. Insurance was pretty good about it and my recollection is it didn't appear to affect my rates much, if at all but, after the that hail storm it rained for days so as you can imagine I took quite a bit of rain water in the interior of the Datsun.........not a pretty site.
Also while I lived in Colorado and at the Gold's gym I frequented a gym member was going out for a jog and a hail storm broke out and he was struck in the head and it left him bloody an unconscious.........so yes, I now have a fair amount of respect for Colorado hail.
