I am 95% there with buying a used 718 S boxter (orange) but have still got a niggle of doubt as there are loads of F Type S convertibles available for £10k less.

I appreciate the 718 is much lighter, faster, better built etc but the sound of the F Type is Far better.

has anyone had both or any experience in the same decision!

Any help appreciated !

It’s funny you mention that. I truly loved the F-Type S but it reminded me so much of the Corvette C7, I ended up buying that for the same money (new C7, used FType). I realize you cannot really get a C7 though. I think you have to decide if you want more of a luxury coupe vs a true sports car. I feel like the F Type kind of bridges that gap between the 718 and 911, especially depending on which engine you choose with the Jaguar. And the engine/ exhaust note just can’t be beat. I haven’t found anything that comes close to how sweet the F Type sounds, other than the Corvette, but the Jag just sounds angry all the time lol.

Did you drive them both? You are the only one that can make this decision. I drove a 911 Carrera 4 and my Cayman S the same day. So did my wife. We both concluded that the agility, the quickness of the Cayman S were incomparable in the everyday driving conditions. In these conditions, the Carrera 4 felt lazy. For us, it was an easy choice, wail be damned... :giggle:

Drove both (F Type R & 718). Really liked both. Handling and expected reliability were my determining factors.

Owned the 718 Cayman for close to a year now and had the F Type for a few days 3 years ago.

The Jag certainly sounds angrier and has a higher hue to the wail. The Porsche has a sportier and more muscular punch to the sound - does not try too hard to seek attention, sound wise. Which is cool.

Coupled with the mid engined sweetness and looks to die for - Jag styling aint my cup of tea - Cayman is it.

Any Mustang with a Borla can produce a sexier sound... V6 or V8 it doesn't matter. Any Mustang will give you a lesser driving experience than a Cayman S (or even a 911 for that matter...).

Depends on what rocks your boat... what you are, or what you appear to be ...to others.

I was ****-bent on an F-Type before getting my current Cayman, particular after reading so many great reviews about how ‘entertaining’ it was to drive. But a test drive in a V6S (380ps) left me totally underwhelmed and disappointed. It just felt heavy and neither particularly agile or quick. Perhaps it was a bad example; it was however an official Jaguar franchise car with not that many miles.

I really, really like the look of the F-Type, which to me has stood the test of time remarkably well. And the V6’s sound great, albeit (to me) a little ‘false’. But it’s such a different driving experience to a Cayman or Boxster. The F-Type is of course aimed at being more of a GT car than a sportscar.

Cayman all the way. A very good friend had an F Type coupe with the V8. Looked amazing, and sounded amazing. But he sold it after a year due to the horrendous quality, especially the interior. Bits falling off, leather wearing really fast, and lots of trim pieces had a gross sticky feeling. Such a turn off.

hah, before I get the Cayman the F Type was also the one I was thinking about : )

But, to me, the Cayman is just overall the better car and it was also better priced than the V6 F Type I wanted by quite a bit .... add to that, at least in my head, the Porsche badge is more exotic and more quality than the Jag one.
In the end it just was a no brainer and thinking back, I think if I was concidering the F Type first it was only because I thought the Cayman was a much more expensive car than it is.

I'd say, try both, and get a Cayman. : )

This may help...

Hahahaha ... I like the beginning where the reviewer likens the choice to a mid life crisis - either you get a bicycle with Lycra to go with it, or you get a sports car!

How true amongst my circle of frens ... more Lycra I must say ... and I’m very glad to have gone the Cayman way. At least the risk of being run over - “mid life” becoming “end life” - is significantly lower.

The pros and cons I thought was clear from the review - the main thing going for the Jag is the sound being more audible. Which is a totally subjective experience to the ears of the driver.

Jaguar reliability is poor. If you like hearing the wonderful sounds on the way to the service bay at the dealership, enjoy.

I could not look at a Jaguar because of their horrible reputation. A good friend had one for about 3 years, got rid of it about 2 years ago. He said it was the worst car he'd ever owned. He rarely got to drive it except to the dealer for the next issue.

I tested an F-Type R convertible and while it sounded great and was extremely fast I didn't actually find it all that fun or engaging to drive. Something about the interaction between the steering, suspension and overall mass of the car just did not do it for me. They are beautiful though!
