The interior switch for my 2017 Boxster S hood and deck wasn't working, so I took it to the local dealer to fix under warranty. After taking it apart, they informed me that it had been damaged by water at some point, probably from a window cracked while raining, and that it wouldn't be covered under warranty. I just purchased it and its in excellent condition. Interior is perfect. How can they tell? Seems like a big stretch for me...

This is something I'd fight bitterly as they cannot prove one way or another what caused it. Maybe it was a window left open or maybe it was water getting past the door seal or even dripping off of your shoe getting into the car. Either way, the switch is in a vulnerable place and if it's subject to damage from water in the location it is in, that is not your doing.

If they took the switch apart, water damage is easy to identify..
I would request that they show you the damage leading to their conclusion..
The switch is in a vulnerable location to water. I mean it's in the door sill and it's recessed, basically forming a place for water to collect, no matter the source. So even though they can prove water did the damage, as we both have suggested, they can't prove how the water was introduced.

Their getting paid by Porsche or owner... no benefit in lying.

However, if the part isn't bad and could be fixed easily fixed... then it is in their interest to get as much as they can from the owner. I tend to trust the dealer until I don't have a reason too.

I'm with you. The dealer's response is absurd. I'd take it up with Porsche Cars North America.
