My apologies if this topic has been discussed many times before, but I am wondering how good the factory security system is on our Boxsters and if an aftermarket system is recommended. How easy are the cars to steal?

Two stories:

Had a medium sized box fan blowing towards the car while I was installing a mod one summer day. When I got done, I forgot to turn the fan off, locked the car, and walked away. About thirty seconds later I hear what sounded like an industrial fire alarm go off.

Went to grab take-out one evening with the wife. She decided to stay in the car, but I took the keys. I locked the car after I got out and the alarm was triggered by her presence in the car.

Maybe these experiences are more common than I think, but they’ve never happened to me with any other vehicle. Can’t speak from an experience of someone trying to steal the car, but I can say the alarm is quite sensitive (and VERY loud).

I don't know if the Boxster has everything the Cayman has, but one thing the Cayman has is a motion sensor inside car. If you want to leave a person or pet on the car you have to hit the lock button twice to lock the car but disble the motion sensor.

Same on the Boxster, double click of the lock button and you can secure your car and passenger, while you're out of the car, and their motion won't trigger the alarm.

I appreciate the responses but was hoping someone could tell me how difficult the cars are to steal with the factory security systems. Having a loud alarm is helpful for sure, but would anyone recommend an after market, better equipped security system, or is that necessary for these cars?

Best regards,
Dan

I can not give an answer on this, but have read multiple stories of people coming back to their car and finding all of their wheels gone, so it certainly is not infallible... But having said this I think that one of the best course of action is not to leave it anywhere that is remote or out of site where bad stuff happens, in one of the incidents above the car was parked on the roof of a parking garage, no other cars in site so far less chance of pedestrian or car traffic noticing something out of the ordinary.

What's the background, had one go missing, or new to you Porsche and you are now worried?

<snips>Having a loud alarm is helpful for sure, but
Really?
The boss left me the company car for 3 weeks while he went on vacation--without telling me how to disable the alarm.
So there I was, outside his house, alarm blaring, hunting for the secret disable switch for about 30 minutes. Every passerby either ignored me completely or commented on how annoying car alarms were.

If they want really want, every car can be stolen. The system on our cars is weak in this sense: the obd port is within reach if they get in the car, via this a key can be made with the right equipment (non keyless entry cars). Keyless entry cars are more easy to steal, they pick up the signal from the key and send it to the car. My advice is to look into an obd lock or a 'ghost' system, there is a topic on this on the forum. Also the tracking service Porsche offers is a good option but the professionals can disable this by removing the built in tracker(and they know the location where it's built in).

Well that's depressing.

I had considered whether it was worth getting a drone to patrol over the car, but I thought the likelihood was I'd just end up with some lovely footage for the insurance rather than prevent something in the first place.

Lol,
Get a drone with rocket launchers that will do the trick ?
Didn’t mean to be negative, the best remedy is prevention, so make it as hard as possible to steal it ,if they see it will take some time they will move on to one that can be stolen in less time, unless they really want it as I said before.

I appreciate the comments offered. I do understand that professional thieves know what they are doing and can probably steal any car if they really want to. Of course easier to move on to a car without extra secruity. The blaring alarms probably only deter the rookie crooks. I just did a quick web search of most stolen 'sporty' cars and from 2010 thru 2012, there were 24 stolen 911s and 103 stolen Panameras for what it is worth.

I think a trunk monkey is the best you can do. trunk monkey - Yahoo Video Search Results
Not sure if the Porsche trunks are big enough though.
