Wondering what everyone is doing for track insurance at HPDE events? I've looked into several vendors and have found it to be a lot more expensive than I anticipated - almost $300(US) for a single day. Hard to swallow when the actual event is far less - around $200(US). My first event I went without insurance, but I'm beginning to realize that is probably not very smart. To be frank, I'm considering purchasing something far less expensive for the track and forgoing the insurance OR going to much fewer track events than I originally had planned. One of the main considerations when purchasing the 718 was to take it to the track though. I love the car, but it often feels like a waste just driving it around town - it's my daily driver.

Has anyone found reasonably priced HPDE insurance? (I realize reasonable is different for all of us!) Other thoughts?

I generally use Lockton but have gotten quotes from all the vendors I could find (Ontrack, Opentrack, RLI, Gagerty from what I remember, not sure if they all offer it still). I've found the pricing to be within a few % on a per event basis, with discounts for multiple events or club memberships shifting the balance. I find the 2 day events to be much better value for fees, insurance, track expenses. If you do more than 7-8 events a year then opentrack has an annual policy which starts to make sense.

If you buy a car worth $25-30k for track use you'll be at the bottom of the pricing range for insurance and should be able to get insured under $200 per event, but beyond that the only solution is to track something cheap enough you can comfortably walk away from if you total it.

Here is my suggestion from the research I did last season.

Call Hagerty and have them price up different options for you. When you go to their website you will see they offer RLI and you can buy the policy online. However, if you get them on the phone, they carry multiple providers and may be able to help you find something cheaper/better.

I originally just went to Hagerty online ( RLI) after pricing up a few online... pretty much all within a few dollars of each other. Then as I read more, I realized the policy I purchased didn't have liability coverage. I think many don't. The whole liability issue has become a hot potato recently and some insurers are starting to offer it. I called Hagerty and switched to OpenTrack. The price at OpenTrack was the same as RLI but it included liability coverage. ( I don't remember how much, maybe $1MM)

I looked at my regular auto policy and yes, if you want to go by the letter, I think there is an argument to be made that HPDE is covered. On the other hand, I really didn't want to deal with the argument. I don't think any insurance is going to come out and say "Sure bring your car to a track, no problem" Even if they do, when it comes time to collect, they may be resistant. Doesn't mean you won't be right but my gut tells me they are going to drag you through the mud and hope you go away.

@nineball - I also have State Farm. How did you go about verifying that you are covered for HDPE events? When I called my agent, I was told the opposite.

i read it in the policy documents. i specifically went over it with when i bought the policy. it may have something to do with the fact that i have a commercial policy as i registered the car in my business name, not sure on that, but i know i am covered. so long as it is not a race-type environment, and DE events are not, i am covered.

i would think anyone spending $60k-100k would be in a position to fight an insurance company if need be, especially if the policy does not expressly prohibit track use under the right conditions.
