I have been on this forum for over two years and contributed little, but learned a lot. It took me that long to make a final decision. Today I took my wife to her ophthalmologist 1.5 hours away. We went early for my first test drive of the 718. Two hours later, I walked out with a commission number in hand :). The dealer had an order that locked on 1/18. Being impatient and adverse to haggling, I only managed a 4.5% discount. It was worth the "lost" savings in searching for a higher discount for the quick turn-around and convenience this order offered. Should be here mid-April. Mildly spec'd (Agate, 19 inch Boxster, 14-way, Apple play, clear tail lights, LCA, black tail pipes, and the free stuff).

So, I'm looking forward to following you all down the rabbit hole of this marvelous adventure - finally! :D

LSD is nice...........had it on my Cayman R. However, for me..........my Cayman with PASM et al is far more capable on the street than I am. I put PTV in the same category as LSD on the street.. I raced Karts for a number of years, pretty successfully, and yet......I do not find the car limiting. I also found the 'clunky' nature of the LSD annoying. They probably have smoothed them out by now but that was my experience. I expect that the amount of research and reading you did.................you are going to be extremely happy with your configuration. This is not meant as a challenge or negative comment about the opinion of LSD......just intended to give another POV.

4.5% isn't that bad for a custom order.

Most of us getting 9-11%+ seem to be buying off-lot.

As far as the LSD goes, it's not clunky at all and you really can feel it in hard cornering on-power.... that said, for most who aren't tracking the car, it's unnecessary.

Thanks all for your comments/suggestions. Coming from trucks for most of my adult life, the stock suspension/accessories is all that I can handle at the moment, and probably for a long time. My brief test drive was eye opening as to how much I was missing, but it will take quite a while before I can master all that this (base) car has to offer. Kudos to all of you that can handle more - I can't imagine what that would be like!

I'm now 22,000 km and 18 months into my base Boxster after some 'reasonable' cars (Honda, Mazda rotary, Subaru), and I'm still impressed with the suspension and handling of this car.

Enjoy yours, they are great cars!

I think you are fine with the 4.5% discount since you did not go wild on options. Paying extra for options you don't want/need will only cause your rate of depreciation to be higher.

I am wrestling with that issue right now before my March 2019 lock date. I added full leather interior and deviated stitching and I have a nagging feeling that I am "wasting" $4,500. I intend to keep my car 10 years, but I still vacillate between loving a great looking interior and thinking I am being frivolous.

Chester, what's wrong with "frivolous"? You aren't buying a truck or an SUV to haul people and things. I think "practical" fails to be a consideration when you buy the object of your dreams (or at least, it does with me). Your Cayman is going to hold you and probably someone who knows you. If you are a famous frugal-wad who "squeezes that dollar until the old eagle screams," then the dichotomy between that personality trait and this Porsche will trip people out of their estimates of who they think you are! You owe it to these people to see you as someone whom they placed in the wrong pigeon hole! :)

Seriously, what could be more personal than a small two-seater car? It should be exactly the way you want it, nothing more or less.

I'll add a few tidbits to solidify your choice, @chester:

- The leather interior is actually a relative bargain compared to a lot of leather upgrades for other makes. Example: the entire seat is covered, whereas in many others only part of the seat is covered. Another example: almost the entire dashboard is covered, including the instrument nacelle and topside surfaces. Most other cars don't go that far.
- The relative quality between many of the non-leather and leather interior bits is quite wide.
- Word is that the leather pieces actually weigh less than their plastic counterparts.

IMHO, full leather is actually one of the few bargains on the options list. I'm normally a non-leather guy; I've only had leather on one other car, which had it standard (370z Touring). I quickly realized how much of a difference it makes in a Porsche, both in terms of how much of it you're getting and how much better it is than the standard trim. It was a no-brainer for me.

I agree chester! You should get what you want, particularly since you plan to own it for a long time. Imagine the pain of regret for that long! I got what I wanted, no more, no less. I don't like leather, am not an audiophile, don't tract, etc... This car is neither a settle-for nor a splurge on things I don't need or want. I don't know about you, but owning a P car has been something I've aimed for since my early 20's. I settled for something else for 40 years. Get what you want.

Full leather is the bomb. And OP: congrats on the ability to snag a unlocked order 2 days before it locked. And, I don’t see a transmission type specified, so I assume it is a manual-good on you as well if that is the case.

I guess I was so excited I forgot a few details. Its a base and PDK. Sorry to disappoint. My wife and I drove manuals 25 years (interesting challenges on the back roads of icy Colorado mountain roads), but have opted for autos the past couple of cars. Call it lazy, old legs, or whatever, we've never looked back. I find the paddle shift to be a challenge in itself - I'll need to rewire my brain to get the hang of it. I feel better now about the discount I got!

Full leather all the way! I had partial leather on my 981 and it was nice but the full leather on my 982 is exceptional! When we took delivery, several of the SAs were talking with us about the full leather and how exquisite it is. I think they seldom have anyone go "all out" on a base-level Cayman so it was a treat to see.
