Well, now we own the fastest spec of the entire 718 lineup, as well as the slowest. Last Saturday was quite a day. Picked up our brand-new Guards Red Cayman S with most of the go-fast goodies (PDK, PASM, Sport Chrono). My wife drove home, and I followed her in our '18 Night Blue Boxster (6MT, base model.) So now we have two 718s parked in our garage.

First order of business? Repaint those jet-black wheels into OEM silver. (I hate black wheels, but given that I got 20% off MSRP for the car, I'm not gonna complain.) Just installed the trunk protectors and put her on a battery maintainer. In 2 weeks she goes into Premier Films here in the Bay Area for a full-front PPF installation (plus the side runners and rear wheel arches, an absolute must) and a full coating of Modesta BC-04.

The two cars are very different in almost every way. We custom-ordered our Boxster after agonizing for weeks on the configurator, thereby creating essentially the perfect car for us. It lacks the go-fast features (it's manual, with no Sport Chrono or PASM), but it has all the comfort and style features we wanted -- the lovely Night Blue metallic paint, a full leather interior (gorgeous Luxor Beige/ black), Lane Change Assist (absolutely essential to driving anywhere with the top up, IMO), heated multifunction steering wheel/ seats, the Bose stereo, the Light Design package, and the delightful Sport Seats Plus, which I swear were created by engineers in Zuffenhausen who somehow found my exact body measurements and built a seat tailored to me.

The Cayman S is an entirely different beast: it has all the go-fast toys, plus Sport Exhaust and 20" wheels, but precious few interior comforts and style elements. While it does have seat heating and ventilation, the interior is basic black leather seats with the 'Leather Package' (just a few pieces covered in leather.) It has the base stereo, no Lane Change Assist, no multifunction/ heated steering wheel, no Light Design package (which I actually quite like), and it also has the regular 14-way adjustable Sport Seats. The Sport Seats Plus in the Boxster are vastly, vastly superior in my opinion. I miss those seats, and I miss the full leather interior of the Boxster. That said, the Cayman is ridiculously fast.

It's interesting how different the personalities of the cars are. The Boxster is a sweet, pretty car that draws compliments mostly from women. The Cayman just gets jealous glares from guys. It's almost like I have a male car and a female car in the same garage. Uh oh. If I leave them alone together, will I wind up with a litter of little Porsches? >:D

Congrats! So when you and your wife both reach for the keys, which one do you go for?
Honestly? Right now? The Boxster. It's just a more elegant car that makes one smile just by looking at her.

Because we 'designed' every feature to be something we wanted. At the time we could not stomach the $12K price premium for the S, so we got the base model. I wanted a stick (an automatic in a convertible just seemed like heresy.) The luxor beige interior and night blue paint were the perfect combo. The Bose stereo is pretty darn good, and the Sport Seats Plus feel like Porsche designed them to fit us perfectly. Lane Change Assist is something I consider mandatory when driving the Boxster top-up. And then little things like the multifunction heated steering wheel, Light Design package, and so on.

I did wish I'd gotten Sport Chrono and PASM on the Boxster, but the price of the car ($70K out the door) was the max I wanted to spend. Still, the Boxster is just such a sweetheart to drive. She's the perfect car for a sunny afternoon drive. I just can't help but smile when I look at her. Of all the cars I've ever owned, she is by far my favorite.

The Cayman is a different beast. (I'd never call the Boxster a 'beast'.). Red exterior, black interior, all the speed mods, hardly any of the comfort mods -- it's a car built for racing.

Amazing how entirely different two cars of essentially the same model lineup can be!

What’s a trunk protector?

Perhaps this? (NOTE: These photos are of the Porsche front liner in my 981 but the fit in the 982 is identical, same with the hood liner. I also have the Porsche rear liner but no photo.)

I want to do the same with the black wheels, anyone have this done before? I heard that wheel powder coat shops regularly strip existing paint/clear coat/powder coat from wheels before applying new powder coat?
