Took my 718 Cayman that I bought new 6/17/17 in for its 2 year service yesterday. I was told it was late for the 2 year service & it should have been done Nov. 2018. The car was set up for service Nov. 2016 & that was when the warranty started, so I only get a 41 month warranty not 48. Shock # 2, they were to set the memory seat so it would move forward when I get in and back when I get out. Well, when I opened the door the seat went forward & I can not get my 75 year old body in unless the seat is all the way back. They changed it back to how it was using the 4 buttons on the door. Shock # 3 was the bill. $1,106. I will take it to the Indy that does my 2000 Boxster S for the next service. I feel like getting a lawyer to get me a refund for the 7 months of warranty I didn't get. Is the only way to get a 48 month warranty to order your new car? When do they start the warranty if you order it? The dealer never informed me of this. I can't find anything in my paper work. Do I have a case?

I dug thru all my paperwork and found a warranty form that stated it expires in November 2020. I'm the first owner. I was screwed out of 6.5 months of warranty. A fellow PCA member just spent $4,000.00 to extend his warranty for 36 months. It's a great car & I'm sure the warranty won't be needed but it just makes me mad. I was planning to sell it with 6 months of warranty left and get a gts or T so now the schedule is moved up. I will probably go to another dealer.

My salesperson explained all this to me. If a car is used as a demo, or if it's sold and then returned right away, or if they want to discount the price and sell it as used, they start the warranty period. Also, I think they can only let the car sit a certain amount of time before they start the warranty.

So...if you see a good deal out there on a "new" car, one thing to check is if the warranty has been "punched". If it has, the warranty runs from the day it was punched.

I bought an '18 CGTS a couple months ago and its warranty had not been punched. Miracle.

I assume you are in the US? Was your car sold as used? I would call PCNA and ask them, if your car was represented as new but it had a previous owner I would call that fraud.

That sucks. One more tidbit added to the list of things changing my mind about Porsche as a company.

This is not uncommon. The dealer buys the car from Porsche (presumably for use as a demo) and receives a nice discount. At that point the warranty period begins. Later when the vehicle is sold, it can still be titled as new to the first owner, but technically the car is considered used. I have purchased two cars like this (one was a Porsche), and both had under 50 miles with partially expired warranties. In both cases the dealer clearly informed me before the sale that the warranty had been punched.

I can't say if it's illegal for the dealer to sell you a car with a punched warranty without informing you, but it is most certainly unethical. While you may have a case against them, your challenge will be to prove that the dealer did not properly inform you of this. They will likely claim they did (and have the paperwork to prove it), and then it will be your word against theirs. I would discuss this with both the Sales Manager and General Manager to see if something can be worked out. This will also provide you with information about what their side of the story will be should you decide to pursue legal action. But for sure, that would be my last purchase from that dealer.

While there are undoubtedly things that Porsche could do better, I wouldn't be blaming unethical behaviour by a dealer on them. It appears the dealer registered the car (probably as a demonstrator) and that started Porsche's warranty--and didn't inform the buyer.

My local dealer has a couple of Caymans being sold as new with 1,000s of miles on them. They're completely up front about it. At least one of them had the miles put on while it was owned by Porsche, then auctioned off. As said above, any failure to disclose is on the dealer.

Warranty starts from first registration so if it was used as a demonstrator or loan car etc you are still the first owner technically but you only get the balance of new car warranty

Sounds like you either misunderstood the terms or the dealer has done a dirty on you.

When I ordered my Boxster last November, while in the show room, my GF briefly considered replacing her expiring Lexus lease with a CPO Macan they had on the floor. I do not remember the specific details but we instantly lost interest when we verified what we assumed was a three year/100k mile CPO warranty but instead learned how short the warranty would be. Apparently, Porsche considers the start of the warranty the day the car is first put in service and that's that and it extends into what one gets with a CPO. I did purchase two CPO's over the years, a Lexus in 2005 and a BMW in 2013 and both came with 3 years from the date of our CPO purchase or 100,000 miles on the vehicle, whichever came first and that is what we naively expected when we looked at the Macan. I also once purchased a new BMW with 80 miles on it that was apparently sold but somehow remained on the dealers lot. I don't know what happened, the car was sold to me as new car, but the original factory new car warranty start date was based on the first official sale, about a month prior to my purchase.

I found the paper I signed that stated the warranty started Nov. 2016. It had 220 miles on it when I bought it and I am the first owner. They claim now that it wasn't a demo but was driven to be on display at auto shows, auctions, & cars & coffee. It's my fault that I didn't read everything I signed. I live near Las Vegas and LA is only 3.5 hours away and there are quite a few Porsche dealers there. It's my fault but since this was my first new Porsche I feel I should have had this made clear to me.

Sounds like you have already made up your mind, probably time to sell your Porsche and buy a BMW Supra....
Several of us (myself included) went from a BMW to a Porsche. Trust me: What's coming out of Munich is far worse.

(And that's beside this point that many auto journalists have made: The new BMW Z4 is a far inferior car to the new Toyota Supra regarding driving dynamics and 'enthusiast quotient'. It's all in the setup.)
