Hi all,

just ordered my first Porsche :) and I can't wait for it to be delivered...

I've got some questions though:

  • my dealer tells me that they have to get an OK from Porsche for a manufacturing slot and that it might be a longer time than four months for it to arrive or possibly not at all??? Is this normal with Porsche?
  • I hate start/stop and wonder if I can just shut it off in the individual Sport Chrono setting and the car will then remember to start in individual the next time?
  • is there anything that I should do/don't do when I get the car that might be different from other brands?

Cheers and Merry Christmas to you all!

What variation of 718 are you ordering? The factory seems to build certain models at a time so I've seen some long waits discussed here. Find the section call the Wait Club. You do have some control over the Stop/Start feature, particularly if you have the SC as you indicated. You will have a knob on the steering wheel to set the mode to one of four possibilities including Normal, Sport, Sport+ and Individual (where you can choose your own combo of features, including Normal mode without the Stop/Start feature). Find the online manual for your car on the Porsche site for more.

Ok, thx for the info. I’ve ordered a Cayman S which I guess might be pretty low volume with all the T’s, GT4’s and GTS’s that seem to be the models they want us to buy...Perhaps that is the reason?

Yep, that's my understanding but hopefully someone can confirm that suspicion. And I did give you an incomplete answer. With SC, when you turn the selector knob off of Normal to Sport or Sport+ the Stop/Start feature turns off also. I typically run in Sport all the time partly for that reason and also because I like the pops and burbles when you downshift. I do use Sport+ on the track and when I come back to my condo building with underground parking, I do switch to Normal to quiet things down (also, the Stop/Start doesn't seem to function when you are at slow speeds, like in garage or parking situations).

I hate to tell you this, but until they have a build slot and you have a commission number you actually haven't ordered anything. You've told the dealership something, but basically all you have is a vague promise from the dealer. If the dealer can't give you a build slot then you might want to call around and see if any dealers near you actually have allocations they can sell. You're not even remotely locked in to anything at this point.

Ok, I appreciate those frank words nonetheless:) !

Did some digging and it looks like they’re in the process of moving all Cayman production from Stuttgart to Osnabrück because of demand on the 992 production line in Stuttgart. That and the fact that the S is a low demand model doesn’t look too good I guess :( .

However, I now remember the dealer saying that they usually can convert one of their preallocated Cayman T slots to an S instead. So perhaps there’s hope to get one within four months?

Btw, the Cayman GTS disappeared from the Swedish configurator a couple of days ago. I guess it’s to prepare for the GTS 4.0, which will put yet more strain on Osnabrück I guess...

Things may be different in Sweden, but in the US relying on what the dealer tells you during the sales process is a risky choice. And yes, Zuffenhausen is all Taycan + 992, which are both super popular right now. Even in the 718 the S is likely to be their least popular option - the GT4/Spyder will have a lot of orders I assume, the T is probably hot, maybe the base...the S is in an odd place. I only ordered an S over a GTS because my dealer offered a much better price. With the discount I had the price difference between the S and GTS was over $15k (with similar builds) and it wasn't worth it.

You’re probably right.

Anyhow, I ordered an S instead of a GTS to get rid of the lower front spoiler, the GT steering wheel, 20 inch wheels and the stiffer torsion bars. This will be my daily year round car, so I want it to be a little more of a grand tourer than a track day car.

Don’t know what car to buy instead if they won’t deliver...

Have you given thought to a CPO. A 2017 or soon a 2018 will give you a 4 year+ warranty and somebody else ate the first two years of depreciation. You will also likely pick up something significantly sooner than a new slot. Yes you might not get the perfect build but you will be in a car sooner.

I balked at the idea initially and went for new but in reality if I had to do it again there is no question I would go the CPO route.

I agree with all of that, except the steering wheel. I had that put on. It's amazing. Feels SO good.

@AceSeventy if you can order a T and option it up to an acceptable base config with your DD needs, that may be the quickest path to what you want brand new. See my signature and its pretty close to a T. Otherwise, I'd look for a good CPO base or S. The 2019 year came with PSE standard to satisfy the sound complainers and I get compliments on it at PCA meet-ups. You'd probably have to add the PCM to a T build but not sure what else.

I agree with @JazzCatGab. I have A Cayman with similar specs to a T plus a lot of "luxury" options. Agreed too on the CPO. My spouse and I purchased a CPO 981 to be sure the Cayman was right for us with the intention of ordering the "perfect" one in 2018. So, no delays into Cayman ownership!

All Ts come with SPASM which is a no go during the winter I’m afraid. Also, the windows are thinner on the Ts which make the road noise a bit of a nuisance even though I could probably stand it.
