I was told by local S. FL dealer that lead time for a custom order is 6-8 months. Anyone else hear that long? Not sure if they are trying to sway me away from a custom order or is that the current reality with the mess Covid has created in manufacturing.

I got 2.5% on a custom order placed in February. Cayman Base for June delivery. Best I could find after shopping around about a half dozen California Bay area dealerships.
I placed an order on a Boxster GTS 4.0 yesterday and way said it will take ~6 month. Hope to have it sooner.
I just spoke to my SA (I am located in Central Florida) I placed my order for a GTS back in early March. The lock date was suppose to be 4/21 and he just told me it looks like it will lock on 4/30 with expected delivery sometimes in July. He did tell me Porsche is going into a 30% shortage of car orders. Whatever that means, I didn't ask but looks like your dealer is right with custom orders taking longer. Are you looking for the GTS model? Apparently those are the hot cars this year and the hardest to find allocations.
If you are dead set on a custom order, I would try to find someone who has an allocation or have an allocation they could swap with another dealer (that's what my dealership did, they swapped another model for my GTS)
I called & visited a lot of dealership for my GTS. It was very hard, almost impossible to find an allocation. I even had my name on a waitlist at 3 different dealership throughout the US. With all the Porsche dealerships in Florida, you should be able to find one that has an allocation. Wishing you luck!

I ordered in late January with no allocation. It locked on 3/27 with an estimated delivery of 6/25. We just checked today and it's now moved up to 5/28!
End of January placed order. Delivered end of May. Aside from the "waiting" made all the less painful with the wonderful group of folk in this forum it was a seamless experience. The "wait" gave me the chance to ask the questions; get the accessories I wanted ordered; pack the "Box Kit" (first aid, oil, tools, etc); clean the garage; etc.
