I am currently weighing my options to get Apple CarPlay. I will be calling the dealership to ask about adding it via this SuncoastParts Apple CarPlay part- https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKU718APPLE.html. The other option I am looking into is NAVTOOL. This part is located here- PORSCHE 718 CAYMAN 2017-2018 Smartphone Mirroring Video Interface. This would not be a Porsche installed part. I have a friend with navtool on a different vehicle and he loves it.

So now the questions:
-Has anyone added either of these?
-If so, what was the install cost?
-If navtool, is it a clean install? (I’m not looking to ruin the look of the interior with the lighting cable running out of a random spot)
-If the suncoast part, does the dealership
add the usb to the center console like it would come from the factory?

I have searched this forum and not seen this conversation. If I missed it, please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I’d be interested in information about Navtool also. My 2018 Boxster S has navigation but no traffic information and no voice activation. My dealer quoted $2800 for parts and labor on the Suncoast voice and Carplay modules. I was not familiar with Navtool and still don’t totally understand what it does , how it works or whether a dealer would install it. I’ve considered getting one of the new, large screen iPhones and a Proclip mounting bracket as a less expensive alternative. I’m leasing my car so there’s no return on investment.

You’re looking at two different setups here:

With the Apple CarPlay, this will basically add the function that didn’t come with or that you didn’t option for your car. This needs to be installed by the dealer and works as advertised.

The NavTool will most likely not be installed by the dealer as it is a break-out box with a harness that works as a bypass of some of the car’s factory functions and safety features.

I installed a similar ‘vehicle in motion’ bypass on my Lexus RC 350 and it requires the removal of the screen unit to get to the harness you’d be bypassing. You’d then need to run an HDMI from the break-out box to your iPhone. This would allow direct screen mirroring of your phone. Oh, then you need to tuck everything in nice and install the screen back in place.

IMO, not worth the cost, time and trouble.

My 2018 CGTS was optioned with the full nav/connect, and Apple CarPlay. But to allow for passenger viewing of video while in motion, I installed the DVD in Motion OBD module:

https://www.kufatec.de/shop/en/vide...v-dvd-video-motion-activation-porsche-pcm-4-0

Literally plug and play.

So depending on what you’re looking for, I hope this helps differentiate between the two.

Thanks for the response. I am tracking the navtool is not the same set up as going with the suncoast part. However, the navtool item offers Apple CarPlay. So in essence you would be getting CarPlay and screen mirroring. I am not as worried about screen mirroring as I don’t have a huge desire to drive down the freeway watching Seinfeld reruns. What I am looking to do is run Waze and Apple Music through the pcm interface.

What I have found on installing the proper Porsche CarPlay suncoast part is a wide range of reported install cost. Most of what I have seen has been very high quotes like the one in this thread. Another member quoted me at a $1000ish. I’ll report back with what I’m told by the dealership when I call. There also seems to be confusion on what is required. For example, apparently some dealerships say you have to install voice control and some say you don’t. At the end of the day I have not actually found a thread with someone who has done a Apple CarPlay install aftermarket on a 718.

Are you using the item you posted with a iPhone or something else? That seems like an incredibly simple solution to get mirroring. If it’s that simple than why are other manufactures going the route of navtool with modules that have to be hidden and cables that have to be hidden?

The OBD module has nothing to do with CarPlay or mirroring. It’s only purpose is to re-map the vehicle’s motion settings so that video function will work for while driving. It is meant for “passenger entertainment” only.

You’re correct that the NavTool would be a CarPlay solution in that it’s mirroring the phone. That would include displaying every app installed as well (bypassing the vehicle’s motion settings is a function of that feature).

Good luck with your research!

Thanks for the explanation on the OBD module.

The navtool option is more than just mirroring though. It does in fact provide Apple CarPlay. Says so in the product description. I also have a buddy that has it installed in his Tahoe. He has said it provides CarPlay... and the other things you already pointed out.

Just following up on this, I was given $2300 as an approximate cost of adding CarPlay through a Porsche dealership to a CS with navigation but no voice control. The cost is driven up because voice control is required for Porsche to install CarPlay (that’s what they said). Needless to say, I won’t be doing this.

That sucks. Especially since voice control would have been a no cost option when ordered new.

BTW, just somewhat related to what you are after rooster, if you were to get CarPlay, the most recent iOS 12.0.1 allows other apps including Google Maps and Waze.

Waze is one of the primary reasons I was looking to get CarPlay. Using it on a daily basis has saved me from getting several tickets.

On the no cost option aspect, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t order it either (I bought the car used). Especially considering it appears almost all 718s have the other highly sought after zero cost options... the smokers package and stupid net in the passenger footwell. Oh well, I’m pretty sure I’ll somehow survive without CarPlay. I enjoy every minute behind the wheel of this car and not having CarPlay isn’t going to kill that.

I decided against it. Just got used to the Bluetooth streaming of the information.

Ultimately I didn’t want someone who hasn’t installed on a 718 learning on my car. I also didn’t want a unsightly white wire coming out of the interior trim somewhere.

That's weird because I don't have OEM Nav or voice control. I have CarPlay and Siri works through that. With CarPlay active, I hit the voice button on the turn signal stock, and Siri activates. Otherwise, the button doesn't do anything.

If you have Apple CarPlay on your PCM, then it may ask you to OK it when you plug it in. If not, you can go to the General settings, down to CarPlay, and it tells you to press and hold the voice control button on your steering wheel (or in my case, the blinkers stem) to start the CarPlay setup. Here is a video.
