Just bought my car brand new in January of this year (~6 mo ago) and my car’s telling me that I’m due for service in 2 weeks. I have about 4,100 miles on it. Is it an error? The car had 64 miles on it when I got it.

Thanks!

It sounds like the dealer put it in service and started the warranty a year ago—service is by time or distance, whatever comes first.
Check with the dealer what you need to do to keep the warranty.

Started the warranty? Is that legal?
As I understand it, dealers put new cars "in service" for a variety of reasons. Doing so starts the warranty. For example, they will do so in order to use it as a demo, or to mark it as "sold" - vis a vis the manufacturer - in order to qualify for certain incentives offered to dealers. In each case, the warranty starts from that date, regardless of when it's eventually purchased - as a new car - by its first owner. With 64 miles on the odometer when you bought it, this may be the case. That said, the earlier warranty start date would have to have been disclosed to you, eg, that is was a demonstrator, so I'm less certain.

This happened to me too. I purchased a new 718 base with 60 miles on it and discovered the warranty had already started 9 months earlier. I confronted the dealer on it and they immediately CPO'd it for free giving me 2 additional years on the warranty. All told, I got an extra 1.25 years on the warranty versus the standard 4 year. It turns out they had made the car a demo in order to free up an allocation from Porsche for another car. I got a great deal on the car to begin with, so I wasn't too upset they didn't tell me about the demo status given that the car only had 60 miles to begin with and they corrected the issue well.

Great story. Sleazy that the dealer didn't explicitly disclose the situation in the first place. but I like the fix!

On that topic, is the oil service independent of the general service? On the dashboard screen I can see right now both oil and general services are due in two years time / 30.000km (just serviced the car this month). However, I've read somewhere that depending on your driving style, the car may ask for an earlier oil change. Is this true for the 718?

Oh wow! Maybe that was the case for me. I’ll try and pursue this, maybe I can get something similar!

AFAIK the oil and general services are the same. Of course if you drive in poor conditions or exceptionally hard then a sooner oil change could be indicated. I'm not sure the car would tell you though.

BTW—I just had the 3 year/45000 Km service done and they forgot to do the spark plugs. I'd gone for a couple of spirited drives when I fully read the service report and caught the lapse. They did the plugs right away and were very apologetic (only charged for parts). The next drive showed me how much improvement just the plugs made in responsiveness and power! Whee! 😊

In my 2014 Mustang, there was an oil quality monitoring system and it did change the interval between oil changes (less often with more freeway driving).

I don't know about the Cayman, in either case, I pay for an intermediate oil change (for the Cayman every 5k mi.) because it does good for my soul.

I am due for the 30k mi. in September having done the 25k oil change at an indie in February. With the lockdown and all, I don't think I will be anywhere near the 30k mark in September. I will talk to my SA soon and see how much grace do I get. The car right now shows (correctly) an oil change for next February.
