Has any one looked into upgrading the standard steering wheel with the Multifunction type? I had read on another forum that it can only be programmed by Porsche.

So no one else can upgrade the software yet I take it. Do you have to buy the complete wheel or just the upgrade parts? Has anyone done this?

Perhaps someone else has tried this replacement but the account I read on the other forum is the only information I have. In that instance the poster bought the complete wheel assembly on Ebay and replaced his. He described the installation as being fairly straight-forward but the programming became the roadblock to completion.

I'm upgrading mine from the base wheel to the GT MultiFunction. I asked my dealer to do it at the first annual service in August. The parts are on back order, so may not happen in August.

My understanding is the SW is tied to the VIN (as others have said here) and it's best to just let the dealer do everything. It's not cheap (total is ~$1800), but I'm hoping to sell the old wheel for $400 or so to subsidize the costs. Anyone looking for a base (non-GT, non-multifunction, airbag not included) wheel?

I’m the guy from the other forum trying to get this done. The interesting thing that happened after the attempt to program was the software did add a “steering wheel” setting option in the gauge cluster PCM. When in settings, I can go to the steering wheel settings for the <>button and choose the desired option for the button to perform. Ie: change station, next song, or change the gauge cluster to show tire pressure or Navi, etc, etc. I can set it but the button does not work when pressed. So some of the software loaded to the PCM but not the wheel. My Indy shop had their Porsche tech on the phone doing the same process and the Porsche tech saw the same results. That was when it was said that this is a pay to play feature from Porsche. Totally doable but only when Porsche enables the software to your VIN. The bay seller is nice but useless for the software enable feature.

One problem is this is a fairly new car and wheel, I am in uncharted waters on this project.

I did it

bought the kit from suncoast you have to replace a few parts not just the wheel

had porsche install it as requires a software change
Do you have a list of the parts. How much did Porsche charge to install?

This thread, once again, illustrates why ordering the options you want up-front is the most cost effective approach. I often recommend the MF steering wheel to people speccing their Porsches, IMO, it's both an important convenience and safety option.

@Porsche2018, Absolutely, but I think that is obvious for most things. Buying what you want up front is almost always cheaper than making changes down the road. That applies to almost anything I can think of (houses, cars, clothes, etc.).

My issue in this case was that I was duped by the descriptions. It was MF + Heat on the options list. I also have a Macan and the multi-function is standard and Heat was an option. I mistakenly believed the MF + Heat was just adding Heat. Every car I've bought in the last 20 years has had MF standard (and yes some were 2 door sports cars), it didn't even occur to me that MF was not standard. I don't need heat because its a warm weather car for me (I drive the macan in any cold/wet weather). So, I didn't order the "heat" option, not realizing it didn't come with MF. The choice to switch to the GT wheel is just because I had to pay for the install anyways and I slightly prefer the GT wheel, but wouldn't have gotten it at purchase if it added cost. All I'm really after is the MF.

Anyways, lesson learned for next time. Make sure you know the default features before deciding on options (don't assume anything).

This is one of the options I wish the car had! Should be standard really. Does anyone know the list of parts that are required to convert. I know I will have to ask Porsche to fit.

I paid 200 dollars to have mine installed by the dealer.
Was that with the parts cost included? Do you have a list of the parts so I can get it costed here in the UK.

I bought my car from Suncoast but the wheel came from the bay. The Suncoast parts website is great but they also hide the real part numbers and do some of their own unique parts that are custom for them. I buy parts from them all the time but wanted to see if my project was doable with a bay wheel. If it is doable, it has the potential to save $1000.00 on the Suncoast wheel pricing. Plus, you would have a new GT wheel to sell, minus it’s multifunction buttons. It has the potential to be an inexpensive upgrade.

I haven’t given up yet... and I bought my car used as well.
