My 2017 Boxster S is my first sports car. It has Pirelli P-Zeros front and back, and with only 5530 miles on it, I was stunned to see that one of my rear tires is completely worn down, with thread showing. The other rear looks like it's almost there too.

Quick online research shows that this is a common complaint with these tires.

Can someone recommend a good replacement tire? I'm not an aggressive driver, and it's all highway and local street driving.

I need to replace them ASAP, as I don't consider them safe now.

Many thanks!

Zero track days. I was really surprised to see them in this state. Past few days there's been a lot of rain, and I felt the car slipping/sliding, which surprised me. Then, a fellow doing work at my house said "Hey, when it rains, do you feel your car fishtailing?" I wondered how he knew. And he pointed out the rear tire. Yikes.

Thanks for you input.

I'll third the PS4S -- the best Ultra Performance Summer tire money can buy, by a considerable amount according to both pros and consumers.

I'd consider the Continental ExtremeContact Sport a fairly close second. This is what I have on my car. Phenomenal tires, especially in the wet.

I won't 'dis' anything else mentioned except to say that each has a significant weakness that cancels out a strength. The two tires mentioned above have no glaring weaknesses -- particularly since Continental corrected the old ECS' weakness, a soft sidewall, in the latest version of the tire.

If you have that dramatic of a wear issue on one tire, please do get an alignment. I don't think you can go wrong at all with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

I am still a fan of the PZeros that came on mine. I rarely commute with the car and mostly drive it aggressively on mountain roads. And, with one full track day at VIR on them with a total of 8,600 miles, I'm getting even wear and have 5-6 / 32 remaining.

I should get 10k out of them.

My concern with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires is they're so grippy, they may take away the little fun I have of getting this car to slide a bit mid corner. The car handles so well one it's own, I don't want extra help from the tires to take all of the "fun" out of it. If anyone with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires can share their thoughts on this, I'd appreciate it!

The summer tyre tests in Europe show a slight advantage to Michelin over Pirelli. The Michelins are my preferred tyre and have been for decades, but aren't made in the 718 18" fitting, so it'll be back to the PZero for me.

Michelin

I have said this before. I replaced my 20" Goodyears with the new Michelin PS4S. After about 2500 miles, the Michelins are significantly quieter, ride softer, and stick like glue. And they are supposed to last longer. I hate to say this, but it's a "NO BRAINER".

Can’t go wrong with 4SPS, they are like glue...even when wet. Provides a lot of confidence.

My OEM 19" Yokohama Advans performed and felt good, and scored close to Michelin in the Tire Rack tests. The rears lasted around 8500 miles which I consider about right for this car and my driving. So not a bad tire, I would consider again at the right price.

Saying that, I've got a new wheelset of 20" OZ Leggera HLTs shod in Michelin 4SPS waiting at my installer.
