Hello all,

New member here considering a low miles 2017 718 Boxster S.
Just trying to get some insights into this model.

Been pretty much a naturally aspirated guy up to this point: (C2S, GT3/RS (5), GT4)

Looking forward to learning as much as possible about the 718 S

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum.

Here you will find a wealth of information about the car you are considering. There is an answer to pretty much any question you have, which you can find using the search bar. I suggest that as there is no way anyone can post a reply that will cover this car for such an open ended request as “insights”. That would fill a book.

For my own part, I can tell you I chose the 718 over the previous 981 version because of the car’s performance. It will not disappoint you. Happy hunting.

Welcome to the forum. I chose my MY18 Cayman S over a MY16 911 Carrera 4. Same price, same mileage. The performance of the turbo in low revs is amazing! You have maximum torque from 2000 to 4500 rpm. It is a game changer!

@sstarnes - I choose our 718 BS over the 981 (and 991.1) for the same basic rationale as @roundtail. Always wanted a 911 and originally intended to buy a 991.1 Cabriolet for a fun/track car...believe it or not, the Suburban just doesn’t carry the same grin quotient ?.

I veered to the 718 BS because the 991.1 just felt (IMHO) too similar to my wife’s SL450 and the 981 (at low revs) too sluggish compared to the 982.

Fellow Porschephiles, please don’t go ballistic here, as my statement was in no way intended to demean or denigrate the 911, because I know many of the similarities diverge significantly as one moves up scale towards driving 10/10’s or when tracked.

Thanks, these look like great cars!

If it pans out, the 718S will be my daily driver shared with “old faithful” (‘02 Tacoma)
picking up an ’18 GT3 early summer for COTA.
I’m registered for HPDE at COTA on March 15th. Haven’t been on a track since 1975, so it’s a toss up whether this old man retained any skill...or guts ?.

I sincerely wish you the best in this endeavor. I'm still in really good shape for my age, mostly because I work out religiously, and my reflexes are still good. I however, gave up all racing 20+ years ago. A lot of those skills should come back for you, but I'm not kidding myself that I would be comfortable today doing it again. Paul Newman is one of my heros in that regard!

Still in pretty good shape too with daily workouts & frequent MTB rides (and an occasional crash), but realize time has taken it’s toll on the reflexes, so I’m fairly apprehensive. Will have an in car instructor. Thus, at the end of the day, I should know whether it’s more track time, or back to the grandstands for this old man.

Me, a mere lad of 66, keeps getting stomped by a man in his mid 70s every time I go to our PCA's HPDE. You'll be fine, I'm sure. I need to get faster, but I've nearly mastered the smooth part. When its raining, I kick butt on the track (at least for the first half of laps)!

I had a 2017 718 Boxster S after a previous 981 and 987. Wonderfully improved car in all respects except the sound (and feel), which I know is a personal thing. Sounded and felt like driving a very fast diesel (derv) or VW bug to me. I kept it a year and traded at great financial loss for a 2017 991.2 in 2018. Now with a further dramatic loss, I'm moving back to the new 6-pot na 718 4.0 GTS because the 718 Boxster is more of a sports car than a 911 which is a grand tourer. I know many will shoot me down for decrying the 4-pot 718. But all I'm saying is be very careful if you've been used to the na 6-pot motors. I thought I'd tried it out and found nothing wrong with the sound. It's ok when you crank it up and at idle but when you're accelerating out of slip roads or downshifting into corners, there's just something missing. After a while, it began to grate on me and I missed my 981. I still do, hence my deep joy at the 4.0 GTS 718.

Permit me a suggestion, if you will, to discourage this.

Stick with this.

Avoid this.
Roundtail:
I thought this Peter's post was reasonable and don't think it needs to be changed. There has been a lot of good information in the other posts prior to Peter's, but he has posted as someone with real experience in both realms (ie: NA and T4) that the OP has experience in as well and may be questioning, I felt the information Peter provided was pertinent, valid, and informative to the original request. I believe Peter recognized the potential issue to be opened with the post and tried to minimize it, but also felt that his experience was important enough to share with the OP. I actually didn't view it as beating up the 718 but rather as essentially here's my experience with it and why I've done & am doing what I'm doing.

Now if we continue on this subject ad nauseam for the next 2 weeks, then I'll start questioning...

MOO & FWIW :)

I thought it reasonable too, otherwise I would not have bothered. To me, he came across as a considerate and earnest person. Hence, no need for potentially disparaging remarks like "sounded and felt like driving a very fast diesel or VW bug". That type of F4 analogy ingratiates no one.

Wow, thanks for this guys. As I clicked to post I half regretted it, thinking I'd rile people because of the ongoing soundtrack debate, which I really don't want to do as this forum has a great membership, far better than Rennlist. I don't want to be labelled a 'hater', which I am not. I fully understand the torque and power arguments. It's just that something emotional was lost to me with my 718S but I can appreciate the trade off in terms of power and handling advantages for others. When I look back on my four cars to date, the first, a 987 base manual Boxster was plenty good enough for me and enjoyable enough as you had to use the gears. Probably also that you don't get much opportunity over here to use all the power unless you track. The OP just has to figure out his priorities is all I meant to say.
