Long time lurker, first time poster. Love the general attitude of the members of this forum. Reminds of a small TT forum I’m also a member of. Picked up my first Porsche in September. A new 718 Cayman PDK. Done about 2000 miles and absolutely love everything about her. Looking forward to many more miles, smiles and new friends I haven’t yet made.

Peace be with you all

Always look back every time I get out!

Welcome & Congratulations! Anxiously waiting on delivery of my 718 CS so I can start having fun as well.
Thank you ‘2019. I know the feeling well. This time I picked one out of the showroom so didn’t have the long wait as with previous cars. I did choose to wait a month just to get it on a newer plate on 1st September. Was at the OPC at 9am! ?

When does yours arrive?

Being a '68 plate means it's got to be WLTP compliant doesn't it? That's when the new EU regulations came into force anyway. Any car that doesn't comply with the new emission standards had to be pre-registered (making it an '18 plate) and sold as secondhand. That's my understanding of the rules anyway - though, as usual, the EU have made a complete mess of the legislation.

If it's a new 718 with a petrol particulate filter can you tell us what the emissions rating is and the claimed power output? If it's the run-out model without the PPF then I guess you got a decent discount.

Hi Grasshopper,

I have no idea what this new legislation means. I’d be happy to confirm the emissions rating for you. Where would I find this information for my exact car? It’s definitely registered as 68 plate car and certainly wasn’t sold to me as second hand! I’m keen to confirm this one way or another as you can imagine.

How can I confirm if the car the has PFF?

I’m currently in Thailand so will check upon my return to the UK.

Thanks

The emissions rating is on the V5, where it's rated for C02 (in gm/kgm). The pre-WLTP rule 718 was rated at 158. What happened on September 1 2018 was that all cars had to conform to the new EU WLTP legislation. The original 718 engine was non-compliant because its direct fuel injection (DFI) emits too many particulates. The particulates problem is why Porsche stopped production of all diesels back in February this year.

In order to make the 718 compliant they had to include a petrol particulate filter (PPF) like on diesels (DPF) - which was pretty tricky because they take up a bit of space, and space is at a premium in the 718. The other problem is that these filters sap power because they restrict exhaust gases. So there are two approaches to this - you can either dial up the turbo to make up for the lost power or you can simply lose power. Both approaches increase emissions and increase fuel consumption. VW have mainly opted to lose power - so the Golf R is no longer 300bhp and its fuel consumption has gone up significantly. But I've yet to see any figures for Porsche's new models, which is why I'm interested. All the manufacturers are being very evasive about this.

You can look on it two ways. Either you have a new WLTP compliant 718 - which will be cleaner (definite positive) but possibly less powerful and less efficient - or you have the pre-WLTP 718 - an paid less for it than you would do for the cleaned up version. It's a tricky one actually. In general I like the idea of cleaner technology but, having had a diesel with a DPF I'm a bit wary of a new version of an engine with a PPF.

Anyway the V5 will tell you. If it's a pre-PPF base 718 it'll be 158 gm/kgm CO2. If not it'll be higher.

I've just had a look at the Porsche configurator (for the first time in many weeks) and I see that they've updated it finally. They've opted to keep the 300bhp and the new emissions figure is 180 (as against 158) gm/kgm and the new overall mpg figure is 35.8 (as against 40.9). Obviously the mpg figure can't be directly compared with the old one because the whole point of the new WLTP test was to give more accurate (i.e. lower) real world mpg figures.

Curious about mine. Since it was already sitting at the dealership and available for me to drive away in August. I opted to wait until 1st Sept. It may be in some sort of grey area. Keen to find out just so I know.

I did get this once...tbh I was mostly plodding along at a steady 50mph on the M6 North from Birmingham. Was pretty impressed for a door to door run including some local driving.

My guess would be that it's a pre-WLTP because I don't think that Porsche had the technology available before Sept 1. And I'd guess that the dealer has "bent" the law by registering it after August 31st - but it's only EU law after all so who cares. It'll be interesting to find out.

Welcome @718

that's a lovely 718 Cayman :) I am awaiting collection of my 718 Boxster, Collection date is the 23rd November

I agree with grasshopper in that its yet again been what we can only call a total mess by the EU for the new emission regulations.
I can comment on one thing and that is there was a grace period for cars passed under the old emission test to be sold after 1st sept 2018... this was for vehicles purchased before a certain cut off time (I think it was April/May) but don't hold me to that... and only a certain percentage we allowed to be sold, this was put in place to give dealerships a chance to actually sell the vehicles instead of just pre registering them... The cut off time was put in place to stop dealerships stockpiling vehicles to sell after 1st sept

Transition Time Line from NEDC to WLTP
All new cars must be certified according to the WLTP test procedure, and no longer on NEDC.
An exception should be made for end-of-series vehicles to allow for a limited number of unsold vehicles in stock that were approved under the old NEDC test to be sold for one more year.

Welcome @718 from another UK, almost owner.
@Ulysse0 is correct. I'm picking up my CGTS on Monday 19/11. It's the first day the new WLTP compliant Cayman engines are released into the UK market. They've been embargoed until then. I would have loved to pick it up earlier but sadly not allowed...

More importantly, enjoy the car and welcome. Did I pick up elsewhere on the forum that you're based around Birmingham?

Thanks Nosmo. Bet you’re well excited to pick up the beast. Yes sir, I’m based in the Costa Del Birmingham. There’s talk of a pre-Xmas meet up. Will create a new topic and would love to meet up with fellow editors enthusiasts.

Good luck with the new car buddy.
