I lean more towards the base due to around $10k savings, but if the S is a better deal than I don't mind spending extra. Thank you in advance.

If it was me purchasing, I'd say the S is the better car. Some good additional options and only $10K more for the S. Entry and Drive, Light Design Package, Bose, and Platinum wheels are all good additions. I think the painted interior trim will look good also. On top of that you get the S engine.

Just to avoid making this too easy, please see my signature and you will see I have a 2019 base Cayman. I think, like most everyone else here, that I have the best car every devised by man or Porsche. No, it doesn't have the VTG turbo or horses of the S, or any of that plethora of goodies your list and @CaymanMatt point out. But, what is your intent for this car? Is it going to be a sporty DD or a dedicated fun-only sports car? Do you plan trips to fun places, or trips to nowhere in particular as long as there isn't many straights? You are looking at two great cars, and I'm partial to agate gray.

Will be mainly a DD and occasionally weekend mountain roads. What do you think is a fair price that I can negotiate for these cars? I do expect an aggressive discount due to covid economy and a 2019 model year.

Both cars are soon to be two model-years old. For that reason I think there should some room to negotiate.

As for which is the better deal, I'm not sure that should matter. If you want an S, you'll want to negotiate the best deal you can on that car. If you don't care about the performance enhancements that come for the additional cost, negotiate the best deal on the base. If a Base checks the boxes for you, why pay more just because it may be a "better" deal?

I would be tempted to offer low/mid 60's for the S and right around 55 for the Base. I'd also try to work a CPO warranty into the deal (ie, giving a little on price) on the S, and the same for the Base if the warranty was started (likely the case.)

That is the wrong expectation. COVID hasn't made the value of 718's drop, with the factories being closed, inventory for new cars is low. Not many people who own these cars need to fire sale for extra cash, so COVID Fire Sales aren't a thing, in my humble opinion. When shopping I actually noticed if you find a decent deal, the cars move fairly quick. So, if you do find a great deal you better move fast.

The S one has been sitting on their lot for 5 months last I checked on cargurus. I do think mid 65k is a fair amount. Unfortunately they didn’t take it and countered with 70k.

Before Covid-19 they couldn't give 718s away... Fewer customers, the 4.0 NA in the horizon, GT4/Spyder close in-hand...

Now, even fewer customers, but extremely few available cars (used), the new car pipeline stopped for a while, too much uncertainty about the future (job, health, etc). It looks like the scales tilted the other way to a seller's market.

We were tentatively in the market, thinking about moving to a condo. Suddenly, in March/April, just about all condos for sale were removed from the market, so that the 'days in the market' wouldn't be too many. I expect to see return to the market in July/August for the real estate (in Houston, an oil town which would be in a recession anyway)...

Strange days!...

Sounds like they want 67,500. If it were me and I wanted the S, I'd counter at 66,000, or 67,500 CPO'd.
So they just texed me they willing to do 69500 after a day I told them I’ll think about it haha

Btw, could you educate me about the CPO thing that you mentioned? What’s the added benefits on top of original warranty? The warranty has indeed already started, but they said car has no owner etc. How should I ask them about it? Thanks

A CPO warranty (certified pre-owned) extends the warranty to six years, and may be a way for the a dealer to sweeten the pot and add to his profit at the same time. Assuming you value the warranty at (ie, are willing to pay) more than his cost for it, the dealer can increase his overall profit on the car selling it with CPO, as opposed to selling it for something less without. A win win.
